So are you home? Well I dont really expect a reply because when you are home you will be on the boat and not the computer. I can just see the cloud of dust surrounding your garage for the next 2 days. good luck and have fun

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hey Folks , I'm back,
I had to catch up on all your projects before I could get to post mine.
My plans got changed when I got home. :( My beloved wife decided that I needed to put up Christmas decorations and help her wrap presents. I now no were all the money's been going.
It's still pretty cold here so I didn't spend a lot of time on the boat today.
Along with all the honey dew's.
When I came home Friday I came back thru Nashville and I found a supplier that sold me resin for under $20 bucks a gallon. I also got some 1.5 oz CSM and 18oz Roving to get me started. He only sold biax material by the roll. I will still need to find a source for that.
The only real work I managed to get done today was on the new transom.
i got the new transom cut out and test fitted.
I decided to laminated the two ply's with PL. I started up the old vacuum press and put the transom in it and developed a leak, got the leak fixed, now pulling 24 inches of vac, and noticed that the two ply's had slipped. Shut the press down realigned the ply's and started it back up would not pull down.
I now have the transom setting on the vac table with a bunch of clamps on it.:(
Wow, I got pretty long winded didn't I, sorry.
I will try to post pic's tomorrow.
Thanks All
Bob

Bob sounds like murphy was with you tonight. Sorry to hear next time I see him I will try to shoot the bastard and tell him to leave us Iboaters alone. He gets around more than my exgirlgriend.

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Bob, also if you are using plywood for the transom I found my old transom had a fault I dont want to see you make. the edges were sealed pretty well and the center where there was no inner wall didnt rot. Where it rotted from is around the drainplug hole was not fiberglassed and the water "wicked" up the transom from there. Make sure you seal that hole the best as it is the lowest point and most likely to see water.
Also great find on the resin I paid $40 a gallon at autozone and thought that was good compared to the local marina.

Any chance you could share the name of that supplier wit me?? I live in Nashville and will need some resin myslf for my deck.

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hello folks,
Well it was raining here all day, and too cold to do any glass outside.
However I did get some work done on the boat. I got the transom completed and now ready to start the glassing on it.
Here's a pic of the transom in the vac press that failed.

Next is the clamping insted of the vac press.
IMG00168.jpg

I used a 1/2 roundover bit to break the edges.

The next is the finished transom, before I rounded the edge.

Not a bad day.
I did get under the trap on the boat and spent a couple hours grinding again. I may take a step back and spend some more time with the grinder to make sure I don't have any more problems.

A couple more items.
I want your advice on the joint for the stringer. I just used the router to cut back abot 3" on each side the PL together. I was thinking about putting in a few stainless steel screws too. Whats your thoughts.

tomorrow I will be heading back to TN, So I really don't know howw much I'll get done. I will at least clean up all the grinding dust.

bankfisher,
I'll PM you with the info on the resin.

I finally got caught up on your thread. Great job man. That transom looks awesome. I am not very good with the wood products, so it was a challenge for me. Give me wires and I am happy!

Transom looks great, Bob! Don't forget to bevel the bottom edge the same angle as your transom, so it sits flat on the hull.

On you stringer edge joining, I did the same type of joint and it worked okay. I turned out to be a weak joint, but it was doable until I got it bedded. After you get it bedded and glassed, the joint used will not matter. I did put screws in that joint, as well. I used drywall screws, since it doesn't really matter what you use, since it'll never see water and the screw doesn't make the joint, the glue and glass does. If I were to make the join again, I would have made 30* cuts and a mortise and tenon or biscuited them together instead of a plain 1/2 and 1/2. ..and I know you have the ability to do both, as well ;)

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Thanks for the feedback guys.
Thanks for the reminders lowkee,
You are right about it being the weak point but I figured that this joint would hold until I got it glassed in.
I do have the ability to do a lot of different joints including dovetail, but I didn't see the need.
I'm not sure if I'll ever get done with the grinding. I keep finding more and more I want to do.
Thanks again guys.

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Bob, I had a couple of 90 degree joints in the framing around the cockpit. I ended up putting them together with some stainless steel deck screws I had. Seems like that would work to hold in in place till you get it glassed. Nice job on the transom!

Looking good Bob...I used wooden dowels in my joints...dovetails HaHa... wish I could do them by hand {not for stringers of course, ya know}

Re: Timid but determined Glasstream restoration

Hello all,
Well I'm back in TN. Until Friday only I hope.
Hey thanks for all the comments.
Cheapboater81 check your PM's.
Hope she floats, I like those pegs, I thought about using a key block but was running out of time.
83vert, maybe I'll do the dovetails in the next one just for you. :D
SKIBUM1M, & archbuilder thanks.
About the only thing I got done before leaving today was Vac out the grinding dust and then had to meet the wife lunch.
I'll be back on the boat Saturday with a little luck.
Thanks again guys.
