Re: Timing and Sync of Merc Inlines (to 1988)

clams thanks for this great post. I have never held a timing gun before, littlelone timed an outboard. After going out to the garage and having a look at your description and my motor, im sure tomorrows timing session will go well. A quick question though.
you say primary throttle p/up at 3-4BTDC and max advance at 34BTDC.
My clymer manual states 5-7deg primary BTDC
and 36.5deg max spark advance.

Which one to follow?

cheers

You can go with 5-7 , 3-4 is just a generic that will work on *all* of them, no biggie there.

34-35 max advance is safer on todays gas. Same reason the "direct charge" models are 21 instead of 23-27.

-W

Well, as stated i'd post my results. FANTASTIC.
It has never run better.
As stated though, i can only get the idle in gear at about 700rpm. 800-850 in neutral. I'm happy with that though, she sure sounds smooth.
Cheers

That's not bad..... old reeds and reed blocks affect the idle. Yours is in normal range.

-W

Clams:

What do Reeds/Reed blocks cost for a 79 140?? Or should I leave that kind of work to the pro's like you and just get a complete powerhead? and if so, do you have or can you get a 140 or should I just send you the one I have? I worked on a 4.5 and a 7.5 in highschool, but these monsters really intimidate the hell out of me.

Craig

Craig, I'm not even sure that new reed blocks are available, I just hoard all the good ones I find on bad cranks - to use later to replace others.

Reed=work on the thing pretty much requires removal of the crankshaft. Shoot me an email to discuss further if you wish.

-W

CC: I have a 75 mercury 850, I have the max advance set at 27 degree. After reading your post
I wonder if I should set it to 21 degrees. What will this do for the motor?

Roger, :) If it is a pre 1988 inline Mercury. I'm not Clams, But I can tell you this.. You better set it at 21 degrees max or for the older crossflow 34 degrees max
Tim

I've been (quietly) trying to get JB to add this post to the Official Annointed FAQ. I think I need to sacrifice a rubber chicken while facing East or something. :D

-W

I don't know the consequences of Clams Canino's request but if you have to stretch a rubber chicken's neck to get results then by all means.
I'll third the motion

Alex

Pinkfloyd is right, hopefully management will see fit to have this topic go where no other topic has dared to go before. I'm confused!!!!!

Alex
