timing light connection

I have a '85 OMC I/O with a 5.7 litre V-8.
I want to check my timing and according to the manual it says to connect a timing light to an adapter for number 1 spark plug.

Does anyone know where I can get this adapter?

I have an induction type timing light and tried clamping it on to the #1 plug wire with the power leads connected to the battery but got no light. Is this because the wires are different than regular automotive plug wires?

No, the wires make no difference. If your lite has the induction clip and you have a good connection on the battery, that is all that is necessary.

Is there a dial on the back? Have you zeroed it? Did you pull the trigger?

Always a possibility that the lite is bad but I think they are pretty durable.

Re: timing light connection

This is actualy the 2nd timing light that I've tried on this motor. I bought a new light (induction type) from Amazon.com. Tried it. Nothing. I figured it was the light and sent it back. Then I bought a used light from a local used tool store. Tried it. Still.no light.

I've used timing lights in the past (probably 30 years ago) and had no problems.

It seems pretty unusual that 2 lights would be defective.

I've tried clipping it on to other plug wires (in case there was a problem with #1 and got the same results.

Engine was running and at proper RPM. I pulled the trigger on the light, no dial on the back (simple induction type gun).

Try it on your truck or car and see if it lights up. May be the type wires you have on your engine. Does your timing light have a positive and negative clip for the battery also? If so they BOTH must make good connection to work.
