Nice progress on the windshields. I agree, the top windshield is a heavy beast. My top one came out fairly easy. I haven't taken the lower one out yet. I notice your lower is one piece whereas mine appears to be in 2 pieces which I believe had been replaced before. Seems they had taken a piece of angle alum and tried to flatten out the angle a bit to form to the angle of the windshield. So I may have a bit of fabrication to do.

Good Job H2O! Well worth the effort cleaning that stuff up; that upper windshield is a "chief" focal point.

I'm sure pooch was amply rewarded for his diligent guard-duty :)

What kinda neighborhood do you live in, WM. Boy, you need a watchdog to guard the smoker? Or just a hungry pooch? :) Smoking is good, leaves plenty of time for boat work while you smoke away.

looking good waterman. i gotta believe that you can find rusto oil base primer for the hvlp sprayer. at least i was thinking the same, but havent really checked into it yet. rusto oil base aluminum primer followed by rusto professional all for the hvlp. let me know what you learn and good luck

Hey guys thanks for buzzing my dry dock!

CC, I thought about using the rusto pro but now I'm not so sure about using it the more I think about it. It's kinda bottom of the barrel quality if you ask me at 25 a gallon you get what you pay for. I would hate to shoot my boat with it and have it turn to chalk in a couple years. Thinking I will use a little higher grade paint like the rusto topside. After spending 100's of hours working on the boat and spending 1000's, I would hate to be cheap on paint. Also paint will be what everyone else notices, not the 100's of hours of work and all the little details. I know the topside goes on great since I've used it before. The only thing is painting all of the smaller trim pieces will be a pain with the gun. Would be nice if rusto put some topside in a spray can for that sort of work.

Here's a link to the only rusto aluminum primer I could find in quarts. Looks all good until you read on the label that it can be thinned with 2 ounces of WATER per quart and no directions for spraying it on, only brush.

http://www.rustoleum.com/~/media/DigitalEncyclopedia/Documents/RustoleumUSA/TDS/English/CBG/Professional/PRO-13_0812_Professional%20Aluminum%20Primer_TDS.ashx

Amazon has this but it doesn't say for aluminum...

http://www.amazon.com/Rust-Oleum-207016-Marine-Primer-1-Quart/dp/B000C011CO/ref=pd_sim_sbs_hi_3

Found it but I would think 2 quarts would do the job.

After looking again I think it's all that latex stuff except the marine version... rats

Thing is I'm trying to use the same brand (rusto) for the everything to do with the paint job. I don't really like the idea of mixing brands of primers and paints. I may end up just rattle bombing the primer job just to avoid the frustration of finding the rusto se/aluminum primer in quarts.

You can dump some in a preval sprayer for the trim if you dont have a detail gun.

Great thinking!

On a side not, what venison jerky recipe do you use? I did a batch last weekend and it turned out awesome. I use this if you ever wanted to try anything different! Sweet n Spicy Jerky Recipe

Zool, thanks for entering my no wake zone dry dock. I haven't used the rusto metal primer, the label does have directions to apply on aluminum though. I linked it on the one post above to see if anyone would speak up if it's usable on aluminum or if they've used it before. I'm a ways out from painting the hull but I wanted to bounce ideas off guys and nail it down before I commit.

I just don't want to use rattle cans for the primer, the gun is way easier and more fun!. Looks like I may be the test rat for the rusto metal primer unless someone says differently after they used it.

Yes I do have a small finish gravity spray gun. It's a pain to gun paint small pieces unless you hang them up and can get all sides at once.

This should be of interest..."Paint Your Boat for Under $100 Bucks...Well Almost"

It has specific details on Painting your Aluminum Boat. It talks about using The Majic Brand paint from Tractor Supply but it's basically the same chemical formula as Rustoleum. Both are Alkyd based paints. Just under different branding but they are ALL made using the same basic formulation. Rustoleum Pro and Topside paint doesn't have a significant chemical formulation difference. I checked with the Techs @ Rustoleum on this last year. Had detailed conversations with them. They also said they did not make a hardener for their paint so therefore would not recommend using one with it, but... I've used the Valspar Acrylic Enamel Hardener with it as well as Many others here on the forum with outstanding and long lasting results using the Roll n' Roll technique as well as spraying it. Check out LakeLovers thread. He did an outstanding paint job on his "Tinner" using Rustoleum.

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Thanks wog, I read your great how to before I painted my sea nymph. My dilemma is getting primer in a can not so much the paint, I'm going to use the rusto topside for sure but also wanted to use the rusto se primer which I can only find in rattle bombs. I didn't like priming the SN's entire hull with the rattle cans but the results were better than I expected.

Was there something I missed in the threads about using a type of primer on the bare aluminum that wasn't se or specifically for aluminum? I just wanted to stay with rusto all the way through the paint job and not rattle it on.

WM - I wouldn't use water based paint on any boat. Why? Because of the water. What I would do and many here have done is use zinc chromate primer, followed by Rusto oil-based primer and finally your Rusto oil -based top coat.

The ZC is only dusted on bare aluminum, it's not for coverage so a spray bomb works fine since you only hit the bare metal. It provides grip between bare AL and the primer coat and isn't meant for sanding smooth. The oil-based primer is for providing a uniform color under the top color coat and for sanding for a smooth top finish. Finally the the top coat is to color the boat, of course. Also you can add a hardener to the top coat that increases shine/gloss and hardness. Both the primer and top coat can be sprayed.

If you have trouble finding ZC, try Aircraft Spruce - PTI SPECIALTY PAINTS ZINC CHROMATE PRIMER from Aircraft Spruce

As I stated in the thread, I'd use the SEM Brand of SE primer. It's compatible with just about any paint ever made. Really good stuff. Pints, Quarts or Gallons. Remember the SE is just a VERY light coat. Most people but on WAY to much SE. You should easily be able to still see the aluminum under the paint. Using Rustoleum Rattle can SE Primer should not be a big deal. 2-3 Cans should easily do the job. Get a pistol grip for the cans and it'll almost be like using a sprayer. The KEY is to acid wash the boat and then neutralize it to make sure she's squeaky clean.:D

Yeah GA I thought it was crazy to see latex based primer for aluminum, it pays to read directions before buying. Not sure about using that ZC stuff, no experience with it.

Great I think I got it now, my hang up was using different brands of primers and paints. Not sure where I learned that it was a rule not to break, it must have been stored in a brain cell I've damaged in the past. When the time comes, I won't worry over the SE being rusto if I want to shoot the SE with the HVLP I can use the SEM with no problem. Thanks for the reassurance and patience, I will over write the faulty data in that brain cell now!

Have a drink and kill that brain cell completely. :) I think the reason for ZC is because Starcraft used it, but paint technology has improved over the past few decades. SE actually fills both needs, binding and smoothing. I hope so, anyway.

Watermann

I used the plain ole clean metal primer on mine. The paint has bonded and hardened really well.

Basically prep it out, clean it up zinc chromate the bare spots, washed it down and used the rusto clean metal primer.

I used two quarts of primer on my 18 SS hull

The only issue I have had with mine is banging stuff into it which is going to scratch anything. I will say this my plain rusto job turned out better than GM paint jobs of the 90's
