I revise my comment, they may be a tad corroded to be of much value....

Looks like salt damage too.....

Yeah Puget Sound ate them alive, I had to dig that one out of the scrap bin.

Had a nice warm sunny day today so I got the cabin out for some tear down. Removed all of the trim and the side windows. If anyone reading in the future wants to know how to get the sliding side windows apart I guess I can go into detail about how fun it is. Drill out rivets, pry clam shell frame apart, there are friction springs every 4 inches holding it together.

Everything was completely full of dirt, crud and some ugly white corrosion. Not sure how anyone doing a resto on a cabin SC could leave all that trim on the cabin and not remove it for clean up. It would have leaked dirt forever on all the nice fresh paint as soon as water was added.

Got all the 70's Landau top material off and it's crystallized glue cleaned up too. Have paint to strip tomorrow and maybe get started on filling holes in the top of the cabin.

Resto buddy came over and had a turn at the wire wheel and when tore all down we a couple frosty ones to celebrate.

I wonder who they paid to cut out the openings for the side windows? I know what they thought, who cares what it looks like, it's going to be covered up with trim.

nice work h20, and i am liking the idea of vent covers back there to cover fill holes. should look real nice, never seen a hole like that either, and not much help here on how to fill or cover it. weather looks cool there, and f.y.i down right cold hear in mn. 34 below this a.m. and 65 below with wind chill. holed up inside watchin football.

Thanks for dropping by CC, yeah started off at 12 this morning and the sun came out again today putting it in the upper 30's. I can't imagine 34 below with that kind of wind chill, would make me think of survival mode if outdoors.

Got a bunch of tedious stuff done today, cleaned trim pieces, window frames, glass and got the paint stripped off the cabin. Primed and painted some trim. Admiral volunteered to help me on the glass and frame cleaning, she was a huge help. It all went in the tub with soap and hot water. Resto buddy came over again today for some more wire wheel action on the cabin.

It feels good to sit back now with my sweats on.

Welcome aboard hadaveha, thanks for the vent offer although I will need 4 of the same, 3 for the stern and one for the bow.

Lets see now, 2 470's for one 4.3 205HP, gonna have to pass on that offer since I only have room for one power plant... :D

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Hello. Love these Starcraft threads - I've read of bunch of them in the last few days. I grew up with a couple of them and have good memories.

This is a 12 page thread I have to say I didn't read everything (I'm a picture junkie) but a question here and some other ones I've read - if re-doing the transom why not switch to outboards? This may be some sort of question that will get me banned/shunned/beaten with a rubber hose but have to ask.... Seems like a lot less trouble long term if not an I/O (and I have an I/O on my current boat)

Not trying to jack a thread but a couple pics my dad converted from slides from the late 60s early 70's just so you know I'm not a hater and since I'm relatively new here hopefully get me some street cred with the 'mob' I've read about. These pics are when we lived in Portland but spent much time in Eastern OR, WA and Western ID (John Day, Roundbutte, etc) If I need to delete this post and put the pics somewhere else just point me to the correct place.

(BTW he always wanted a Chief and as you can see he sort of converted the CC to one)

oh and awesome beer fridge however one suggestion is to drill thru the side and run the tap out; keep the beer colder.

Morning Joe, welcome aboard and wow! that was a early morning fix for boat addiction. I really like what he did with the twin OBs and the cabin on the CC. A better place for more SC junkies to gawk at your great pics would be here...
Starcraft Boats

I have a limited number of fans in my club since I haven't been on the forums for much more than a year at this point you should get some attention over at the Starcraft boat thread. BUT leave the post and for sure the one pic of the conversion beached.

I just need to fab a new front motor mount and I have the dimension sheet for the 4.3 so I know exactly where to put it. Piece of cake! I have the whole donor so the rear inner transom mount is a good to go too.

posted on the other thread. Notice dad got all the slides in backwards? And funny story after dad sold 'The Loon' he ran into a guy launching it about 10 years later.

But - are you dodging my outboard question or are you still looking for the rubber hose?

Hey Joe in that pic of your dad on the lake in the CC, I spotted a tall can on Oly!!! Not too many guys outside of WA State would recognize that can. Awesome pics of when SC and Oly were in their heyday.

Edit: OB vs I/O they made the Chief in both and most of us are either opportunistic when we go out looking for the boat and jump on one or go looking for the one we want. I wanted the Merc I/O so I could learn about them and I grew up with our family Merc I/O's on Lake Chelan.

Actually that's 'Uncle Jack' (godfather) and yeah the family grew up on Oly and Hamm's.

I guess that is the same with me I grew up with O/B's

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

More trim work and cabin repairs in the evenings this week. Holes drilled in the cabin... counted 66 of them to repair. With a few deletions in standard Chief equipment such as the side cabin to gunnel rails that were missing on my purchase and I'm deleting the little railing around the front of the cabin, sorry purists it looks out of place to me without the side rails. I plan on putting on 24" stainless grab handles in place of the side rail.

The area in front of the helm suffered the worst.

66 holes!

Maybe this guy was using it as target practice? :noidea:

Look on the bright side, it is within reaching distance of the fridge...er I mean in the garage. :)

A couple times I've wanted to do that myself to the whole boat!

Re: Tin addiction 18' Starcraft Chieftain

Still "plugging" along... some of the JB didn't set. Got to sanding and the stuff just crumbled. Ok, now I remember why I don't like JB, if you don't mix it just right it won't set. So had to scrape it off and start again, was hoping to get the cabin primed this weekend. Some big holes may have too much of a span and need to be backed underneath. Oh well...

Happy TGiF! beer.gif
