Re: Tipping Mechanic????

but I like to see top quality service people move up into decision-making positions
In a small shop I agree - if the wrench can become a "working" supervisor or manager. He gets ahead and still does real work.

Unfortunately once management becomes a full time job, you've lost a good tech. It is a difficult decision to make - if you enjoy supervising others and/or helping to run the business, go for it. But a lot of people (in all businesses) trade off money for work they don't like when they "move up". Been there. Done that.

And the letters of thanks/recommendation is exactly the right thing to do in lieu of tipping, IMHO.

jollymom, the lottery tickets are perfect...I bet they were smilin' when you left. They won't for get that for a long time, and next time you are there, you'll find that your lottery tickets were valued at much more than you paid for them. :)

Chief – you are incredibly optimistic. :)

And don't forget what happened with that $million M&M candy wrapper. :)

Re: Tipping Mechanic????

Ma ole pappy taught me a lesson.

When I was a kid, two men came to him and asked for a raise. They promised to work harder if they got one. He told them You work harder first and I'll give you a raise after

When they'd gone he said to me Son, never pay for work until it's done

Ever since, I've never tipped beforehand, but I've tried to be generous if I'm happy with the finished job.

Ciao

18rabbit
I find that a couple of dollar lottery tickets in an envelope has put a smile on everybody's face I given one to. I never get tickets for myself, but for those I pass them on to, it seems they have been overly appreciative... :)

Re: Tipping Mechanic????

I need to clarify a bit.

The "top quality" people I want to see in charge are the people with top quality customer service attitudes and skills. They aren't usually the most skilled wrenches.

I agree that putting a master wrench behind a desk just because he(she?) is a master wrench usually gets you a bad manager and costs you a master wrench.
