In a small shop I agree - if the wrench can become a "working" supervisor or manager. He gets ahead and still does real work.<br /><br />Unfortunately once management becomes a full time job, you've lost a good tech. It is a difficult decision to make - if you enjoy supervising others and/or helping to run the business, go for it. But a lot of people (in all businesses) trade off money for work they don't like when they "move up". Been there. Done that.<br /><br />And the letters of thanks/recommendation is exactly the right thing to do in lieu of tipping, IMHO.but I like to see top quality service people move up into decision-making positions
