Re: Tips for Selling A Decent Economical Boat

This might sound like a silly question, but the boat I'm looking to sell this weekend doesn't meet criteria #1. Any suggestions on how to sell a less then perfectly functional boat? I'm not looking to "get over" on someone or rip them off, but I do want a fair price for my boat in "as is" condition. I'm just not a do-it-yourself-er and also do not have a place to do the work to learn.

CATransplant I've been enjoying your posts for a long time. This one truly might be your best. buying or selling, there's lessons to be learned throughout your post.

In that case, concentrate on point number three. However, be advised you may be shooting yourself in the foot unnecesarily. Have you looked into addressing whatever you think is wrong? If we're not talking major work you may find that you'll recover what you spend. You'll certainly have an easier time getting her sold. Just a thought.

Whatever you do, DO NOT write "$20 dollars in parts and 5 minutes' work and it'll be as good as new and worth twice what I'm asking!" I really can't stand that line. :p

That said, I agree with lncoop...does it run? If not, what will it take to at least make it run? IMO, any vehicle (other than a rare classic, of course) that can't be run has no value beyond a pile of used parts.

If it's just something like a sticky steering cable or it needs nav lights or somesuch, the "value deduction" of that can be assessed reasonably easily by a potential buyer.

For every 10 crooks there is one honest seller. I bought an 18' pontoon boat from a guy at the swap meet! He said that if it didn't run perfect he'd buy it back for every penny I spent. My wife and I took it out to the lake, and it ran perfect. We've had it out every weekend for two years, and not a moments trouble. It's a 2000 with a 2003 bigfoot.

If you use craigslist and are posting 4 pictures. make them count. One thing that upset me more then anything is they say oh perfect condition showing little age. They have zero shots of interior and when you get there it looks like 5 rapdid dogs tore it to pieces. or visable hole in the hull be honest with your posting and take really good shots.

The other ones that get me are the ones w/o pictures or the ones that have 3 pictures of the boat all covered up! Come on, if you really want to sell it then take the time to at least remove the cover.
