Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

The guy selling that motor is selling a ton.....he also had a 17 or 19 ft(can't remember) cuddy cabin boat with no motor. I almost bid on it, but fell asleep and slept through the auctions end. The final price was like 40 bucks for the boat and i'm 50 miles away.....I was MAD! ( the boat was much like one you had posted about earlier that had that merc on it)

Yeah right about now everyone is winterizing stuff. I just put my grandpas motor away for the winter. Its a 1966 18hp evinrude which I may borrow for testing later. I also have access to a boat on a river near me that I have a 5.5 johnson on. My favorite is this little gem I keep up north...
Wish I wasnt so cheap. :D or... i wish people were'nt so proud of their motors... I'm having outboard withdrawals. Just have to believe they will still yet get cheaper as winter blows in. :)

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

Idk Wimperdink....with those smaller motors I think anytime is pretty good. In the spring people get rid of them because they cant start them because of some simple problem. In fall people get rid of them so they dont have to winterize them. I guess maybe
I am blessed to live where I do, as even though Minnesota claims to be the land of the Lakes but we have more, and have like 12,00o square miles of water......people are seem to be unloading a motor somewhere. My grandpa found and used an old merc that he found on the side of the road for some 20 years before he got the motor he has now.

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

I'll get a pic of my little motors up here for you guys in the next day or so. I've got a couple of inherited ones from my grandfather that I intend to restore or at least make reliable when time can be made. And I have a couple of less sentimental but more useful motors for putting around the river. The seahorse ten needs a coil or points or both this winter and will be pressed back into service on the shell lake boat so that the merc 9.8 can resume experimental craft duties (it's very light).

Ten pages, this has got to be the longest thread ever!

Pony, there are a couple of regular ebay sellers of small antique motors in WI. One guy who I watch is just an hour north of me, well worth the drive if he has something I would just have to have :D BTW, that Evinrude is sweet :D

Yeah theres one about 15 min from my house......I keep an eye that him from time to time. only problem is his are expensive as most of the time they , are motors that he has completely restored cosmetically, mechanically, or both.

Restoration will add to the price for sure, you would be paying for his time involved. I was watching a REALLY nice merc 10 hp a few weeks ago that I almost snatched up (right down in your area) but it went for around $500 and that was just a little much for me. Probably totally worth it though, it was a beauty!

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

so i'm guessing around 500 is a normal going price for a 10 to 20 hp motor?
I really do feel cheap now. lol and I let that 73 johnny 25hp go for 283 cause I wasnt willing to spend more than 255 :D

oh and he wouldnt accept paypal. always a negative with me.

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

don't feel cheap Wimp....that guys motors are like complete restorations. That 66 18hp my grandpa has he bought for $100, the evinrude in that pic I posted was $25. $500 in that case may be reasonable only because the motor is being sold by a mechanic and you know exactly what you are getting......cheaper motors are out there.

I refuse to use anything but paypal.....all other forms of payment to me just seem unecessarily unsafe

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

lol you guys up north can probably find outboards at garage sales all day long huh...

opinions here.... what is the approx value of a good running used

10 hp
15 hp
20 hp
25 hp

now Im talking about older used but in good running condition... like 70's models. the newer ones are well out of my justificationability range.

oh and you wisconsin guys, what are your finders fee's for finding cheap outboards locally and shipping for people like me :D

p.s. the reason I'm being so cheap is you've seen my projects and I'm fully expecting one of them to sink one of these days.... hate to loose a good motor :D . need to tie my motor to my gas tank so maybe I can rescue it still :D

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

yes at walmart and a few others, just walk in and pick up whatever it is and "offer" a lower price if they wont give it to you "somebody else will" (their competition) if they dont, walk out without making a scene, and when you come back for the next purchase they KNOW they will loose a sale if they dont give you the price. 7 out of 10 times you will get at least the price the item goes on sale for, sometimes you will get more. America is like the only country where bartering and barganing is "taboo". it really works at big box electronic stores..

and a really important point--i almost never argue with an independant "mechanic"(plumber,a/c, ect..) about his hourly rate. i am an electrical contractor i have play in my parts but the hourly rate pays my guys, overhead, ect..
