so lark, do you still coat the whole boat with epoxy resin before fileting and taping the seams and then epoxying them??

Some day I am going to figure this crap out

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

you just need to make sure the epoxy is soaked into the wood before you put your filet in place or it wont stick to the wood as good. picture the epoxy that is soaked in as lil fingers grabbing inside of the wood too.

if you want you can just soak the seams about 2 or 3 inches away from the seam center before you put your filet and tape in it.

I just figure since it will seal the wood decent I seal the whole thing before putting the filet in there. just me not to trust paint to properly seal the rest of the wood.

I doubt you'd notice a difference unless you were trying to shave hundredths of a second off lap times, but you can tell your buddies it makes it faster if you're too lazy to sand the hull or you run out of Coronas :D

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

Here they are: The one on the left is an Evinrude Lightwin, the green one is a Johnson. Both of these are hand me downs and need some attention. The white Seahorse is a 10 hp and came with the Shell Lake boat for 100 bucks boat, motor, and trailer. It is an OK motor, I plan to go through the ignition this Winter to get it running right again. The 1984 Merc is the motor I hate to love... It gave me a lot of crap when I bought it for 300 dollars and I wanted to deep six it but after tuning it up a bunch it is a sweet runner and very light weight. I trust this motor 100 percent but I'm not thrilled with some of the plasticky parts in it.

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

ck I'd love to have your lineup... my line up consists of my 4hp and a trolling motor :D I'll work on it this winter and see what I can come up with though :D . btw did you dry up the rapids yet?

Tracker rougher is better... gives it that redneck look that my boat has lol. I got tired of sanding it so I left the sides pretty rough and the top and bottom are just kinda smoothed out but still rougher than I would like. The cockpit I just knocked the knee killers off and painted it.

CPJ dont taint the rest of us with your templates :D :D :D By the way how is the yak coming? Havent heard much from ya lately. Figured you've been out there slaving away on it. :)

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

Yeah Wimper I got the rapids under control but I've not been able to subdue the headwaters yet. I pulled the throne and threw a snake in the hole which helped for a day or so but I'm still having issues with slow current. Mr Hanky likes a fast ride you know so right now I'm soaking the waterslide with some high octane juice and taking dumps at the shop if I can help it. LOL!

CK,
Maybe if you let Mr Hankey have a ride in your dug, he would leave you alone!
Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

epoxy needs two coats. You put one one first, let it cure. then you can put your fillets andwhatever else in, then another to finish. then you do alot of sanding. then you may whant to put another coat of epoxy on, especially around any taped edges, the sanding may have exposed some of the glass fibres. give it one more light sand to smooth things off. Finish off with a good enamel paint. (the paint will need a few coats and sanding in between, with a buff the finish off the last coat).

Make no mistake guys, to get a nice smooth and fair finish on a wooden boat, you will do alot of sanding.

P.S. There is still just as much sanding if you use epoxy or poly resin.
