Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

it ain't hard to modify an old leg to suit a briggs engine. My friend and I did one a few years back. We even ran a hose off the water pump up to the cutting board on the side rail of the boat, that way we could clean our catch with risking droping it over the side.

The main draw back was the noise, we never ran the exhaust down to below the water line.

The main plus was the fuel economy, the little 1/2 litre fuel tank would keep us trolling for about 2 hours, the boat wasn't very big mind you, about 12ft.

And as for camo, don't be to particular about it being neat. A blurry camo job is better than one with nice sharp lines and stuff. Three colors with a few shades of each, Green (light and dark) Brown (same again,) and Grey (you guessed it...... two shades of this one too!) randomly blobs of color, feather the edges of the colors so there isn't too much of a distinct line between them.

still stopped at the moment, to many jobs to do all at once, and the wife decided that the boat was very low prioretry.
   :(

I hope to do some more on it next weekend.
The only thing that I'll be able to do for it this weekend is weld up the steering brackets for the motor, and maybe work out the steering wheel and cables....

Last I saw of it, I still had no stringers or top. Did you get those put on in the meantime? Or are you just doing things Quentin Tarantino style? Back to front. :D

Dave its looking good... those look like real frames... did you forget about the template stage? :D

I accomplished creating floor space in the garage. (cant call it cleaning cause its still a mess) And building a motor stand in aticipation of arriving motors. :D (Its good to dream right?)
What a pitiful lineup.
Terantino Style lol :D I get a lot of my projects done that way too when things get busy. Don't sweat the responsibilities Lark, you've got all Summer to do that stuff! :D

Nice Dave, what kind of wood is all that?

Wimper, A motor stand sure helps, I made three individuals, I like the idea of one big one for a storage stand but maybe you need one more single motor stand for test running motors. Is the one on the left for your electric air boat?

lol... yea that one will be made of balsa and remote controlled cause that motor wouldnt push anything else :D I considered making the stands individual per motor but I figure in the limited space I have to work with and all the other crap in there I needed one storage stand.
I'll probably find a 55 gallon barrel and just make a test tank that I can attach whatever individual motor to and store it outside to save room.

yea it'll allow for any size of engine... I'll manufacture a mini transom on it so the barrel holds the motor.. it'll be at a perfect workable level if I need to do anything more than run it.

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

I'm scouring ebay for outboards right now. There are so many in WI it's not funny, I guess it helps that most of the old ones were made here and that we have more lakes than anyone else. :D And we're smarter and better looking :D

Those two old motors I showed back a while came from my grandfather who toyed with outboards as a hobby. Spoken history tells of him always having a rack of outboards in need of repair or tune up. Apparrently he got em for next to nothing and fixed them up for a little profit and fun. That side of the family were great fishermen too.

bet with the amounts to be had up there... you'd have better luck looking at garage sales and flea markets as for as prices go. With ebay your competeing with every other fool across the country.

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

I don't really have the time to go garage saleing looking for motors. Besides, shipping costs keep the outboard prices reasonable and I don't mind going for a day trip cruise if I know for sure I'm coming home with something. :D

I've got a few good watches going right now so we'll see...

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

To answer your question, I want one of everything :D For now I'll settle for a little putter with built in tank, a 20hp, a 35hp. Must be Merc, Johnny or Evinrude. :)

Hey Wimper what did you think of that ski boat? Looks like a museum piece to me if there were a museum for pleasure boats. There is a guy on iboats who checks in from time to time who owns a Besmeiyer (sp) ski boat from the 60s that is totally showroom original. He even has the life jackets and all from the same period. So cool, I love old speedboats! :D

Re: To Build a Boat (any boat)

lol bet thats got some power to it. He claims it has pulled up to 10 skiers at once out of the water. Thats a bit of a load to say the least... hope he towed them back into shore cause its only rated to carry 8 people lol. Its pretty cool lookin though.

If your bored, I'm in chat. Had some trouble getting in there though. :(
