It was bad enough having a deep snow cover. Now there is 6" more on top with freezing rain right now. Its going to change back to snow with predictions of 6 to 8 more today. Just heard on the radio that 19 people have already lost their lives in this storm. Please tell someone to send some of that so called Global Warming this way,,,,,,,,,,,,oh I forgot, they say this is the by-product of GWarming. Sorry, I don't believe it one bit. Good Luck and I hope everyone is going to be okay. I know gonfishn is getting hit with lots of ice from this storm. Hope your alright Doc.....................SS

Re: Todays ICE/SNOW Storm

My wife didn't want to drive to work this morning, so I took her in my 2WD service van. Had no problems, but I did come back to my house to take her 4WD Explorer to complete my work day. Geeeesh an inch an hour. Yep SummerFun, I'm about 125 miles west of you between Columbus and Cleveland. I feel bad for those further south. I can deal with the snow, but that ice tends to take out electric and make transportation really rough. Well, got to get back out in the crap, just got a call from one of the stores,,,,,,,NO HEAT which means its time to go up on the roof......I'm Lovin it!.......NOT

We're mostly used to that stuff here, but I feel for you southern folks who are getting an uncommon freeze. At least there is a good chance it will melt soon!
Good luck!

Re: Todays ICE/SNOW Storm

It's getting really nasty here in southern Indiana.
I was awoken several times over the night with the shotgun blasts of the huge cedar tree by our bedroom losing it's limbs.

ABout 1.5-2 inches of ice covered with snow. Power flickered off and on several times last night but we're still on the grid.

Firewood is stacked in the garage and the propane tank for the outside grill is full.

Sure am glad I'm "quitired" and don't have to go out in this stuff.

Y'all be careful and hunker down till this mess cleans up.

Re: Todays ICE/SNOW Storm

Just got back from ferrying a few visiting Congressmen and Senators back to New York City from Long Island via the East River. Snow squalls really tested my navigation abilities using only GPS and Radar thru the barge traffic. Visibility is about 50 meters at times. On the return we iced up real heavy (steel vessel). Sent the Midshipmen out to break ice like we were in the Bering Sea on a crab boat. Probably didn't have to do it, but they looked bored and it builds character!!:p

What they think they don't have to work ?

What you never had to break ice ??

They give you any lip? They would be out breaking ice for a week.

Sometimes ya got to show em who's still the boss.

Yep we got hit a pretty good lick here. First came the ice then a few more inches of snow then more ice and finished with 3" of more snow. Cleared off now.

Pretty much closed down here. Gave the mail lady a soft mallet today. Said she needed it to open the mail boxes. She brought me in some much appreciated checks.

Re: Todays ICE/SNOW Storm

Glad to hear you are doing okay Doc. 14" on top of what we already had. It finally stopped about 2:30 this afternoon. I was surprised that the majority of people actually drove civilized today.

At one intersection a semi rig was stuck. When the light would turn green, nobody would let him try to get moving. So myself and another guy parked our 4x4's and held up traffic until he was able to get through the intersection. Only a few people were a bit angry, but that poor trucker was there for 30 minuets and nobody would help him.

About all I did was run the snow blower at our stores to keep the walkways open and fixed one heating unit. I haven't done that much physical labor since I washed and waxed my boat last year :D (about the only thing I hate about having a big boat)

Just glad to be home and out of the snow.

I feel for you all. The lake area had it's issues a couple of years ago.

Ahhh the aftermath.... we ended up with 15-18" but the wind is still screaming! Hopefully we will get some real sunlight today which will settle things and slow the drifting.

I could be a toss up.

That ice storm shown in the photos collapsed hundreds of docks; commercial and private. Many millions of dollars just in boat losses. Besides the "normal" boats there were 50+ foot cruisers that sank as well. That was the second storm in 20 or so years that caused dock collapses. Many private dock owners soon found out that their homeowners insurance don't cover docks from damage from the weight of snow or ice.

My little POS dock made it through like a champ. Settled a bit, but the deck never got wet.
