Although the old Johhny's were reliable motors, I was a Merc Freak way back when. Still like the old XS150's.
First pic is of one, but not mine. Second pic WAS mine. This was an original 74 150, but melted a piston. Builder had a 76 XS block sitting there..said toss it on. Had an XS louvered cowl, but had a blueband decal on it. You can see it in the pic. Eventually I ponied up for the red decal..On a 17 foot Switzercraft..SS/surface 2 blade prop...just too cool!

Nope..thats the way it ran...had dual Race Rams..no T+T...Bobby Switzer (google SwitzerCrraft Boats..know him personally since he stated the madness..back in Illinois..he built it and set it up..Genius!)
Super hull, .. like a freaking AIRPLANE...!.ran the last foot of somewhere 12 inch pad..solid !
Duel Teleflex/Merc Ride Guide, only dual cables..SUPER response..! steering ..needed very little wheel "saw" to get Chinewalk at bay..(not Scott, the real chinewalk at speed..!)..
Out in the shop now twirling wrenches oh a CD-18 Jonny..(61..5.5hp)..back in the house I will post a flat-out 73mph blast...Jeezz, middle /late 70's, Nam Vet..did the 2 year "do i WANNA BE MARRIED..SHE WANTED KIDS, ..I wanted a 14x28 SS prop..2 "..we each got ours wants..just not together...we were too young..)..that said, a REAL BABE MAGNET!
By the way, all these pix I post come off my Yahoo "Group" site...go to Yahoo, search " oldfastboats "...I have collected HUNDREDS of photo's of well..OLD FAST BOATS!..Seems Scott.."Chinewalker"..has gave up the site he had. "Went there..not there anymoire Bud.." ..?
Anyway, I have uploded pix of "Chine's" site..in prosperty now....man, does he have "STUFF".,.and knowledge..!..more later with pix..

Here's an old 70's pic,..Switzer at 73mph..(no GPS (duh!) only a 200hp NEW Switzer GL20 next to me at speed runs..(not that pic)..
...and second..my latest 135hp Crank-up rebuild..16 foot Faltbottom...put together over winter last year..do the math on age..aint giving up yet!

I like the way that style merc looks on a boat, even better than the big johnsons (don't tell anyone). You sure have some nice looking toys!
I wish I knew how to work on one of those BIG ol' mercs-- I'd like to have a rig like yours myself, but will probably never have one--even if I finally get over my small motor addiction.

Don't know why, maybe it was me as a kid seeing those 20h's on Hydro's, but sitting still they are still some good looking motors! Always liked the green and silver too. My Merc guru has his baby parked next to the TV in the family room..power goes out, he can still sit there for hours and watch!

I like the john's and rude's from the 50's, they have character...I run a 56 30 hp rude on my 16 ft Lowe and just bought CD11 or 12,(paid $25 for it) not sure which it is yet...5.5hp that i will run on my 12 foot Elgin alum. I also have a 59 merc mark15, with the auto tranny, got it for $20, guy couldnt get it started, I havent tried yet, but it is all orginal, kinda looks like Chinewalkers avatar.except it is tan, and not near as shiny. Bought it more on a whim than anything.

Chinewalker's 20H merc looks like it's actually gold plated--nice! I'd hate to have to paint the lettering on the front! There is some CRAZY looking racing merc 20H on ebay that is already up to 1100.00 ---Something that UGLY has GOT to be really fast!

That champion is a nice color, the mid-section and lower unit have a beautiful shape. Almost looks like it could run. But I bet you don't--right?

I guess I'm just going to have to finish my '58 evinrude 18hp fastwin and show it running down the pond......

Yep it's a good runnner...the old Champion I mean. Later today I'll post a 58 FD 18 hp Johnson that I redid in 2006. It's my "main man" right now. Plan to put it and a 55-56 15 hp Johnson on the back of my boat restoration project now underway in the garage...just to to try my hand at outboard rigging.

Here's a glimpse of my Johnson FD-11 18 hp, after cosmetic and mechanical restoration. IMO this is the best looking of the 50's Johnsons, and a workhorse to boot.

The ugly racer on eBay is ALSO a Mark 20H. It's the conversion "Toilet Bowl" model that I spoke of in my initial post. Ugly, yes, but man alive, they sound so cool! Absolutely nothing like it!

Well, that is a beatiful '58 johnson! I prefer the '57 myself but can't really put a finger on why.....I thing I like red with white stripes....Or maybe it's because I don't own one! I do like the 56's that have more red, wish I had one of those, too.
Any other interesting motor pics?

BTW--I'd like to hear one of those "Toilet bowls"!

Yep...far as I can see, it was the ONLY Green and Gold motor made. One of THE most 50's sought after Mercs made..OB's whipped up by Carl K. ...he had a vision..and it was speed!. ..not "Reverse"..(DockBusters..50's..most pretty motors made!...his thought.."why do you need to back up in a BOAT?)
Read Merc history..him and Charlie Strang.with the OD vision, and a V-8 in the back...
