Re: top 5 uncommon dream muscle cars

The early Barracudas never had Hemi's from the factory! Without checking I think the Hemi's came out around 67-68!

I had a 66 Formula (S) and the only HP engine available in those years was a 273, Solid lifter single AFB, dual point distributor! Only problem was that it had the rear end from a Vakient 6 cylinder and you could blow it into pieces so quick you didn't dare do many burn outs! I put 3:90's in the rear of mine and was easy off the line and it would tear up HP 289 Mustangs!!!
Check again the 1964 413 HEMI rated at 415hp dynoed at 800+ it was also put in the chrysler 300J has twin ram injection (dual 4 barrel carbs with an intake that crossed over to the sides of the engine) pass anything 'cept a gas station:D

Yes I have scattered many of those rear ends grabbing second gear, never in first. The 273 was gone long before I got my 65, but I have found one and am gathering parts to make it like new. I am thinking about putting a dana rear end in it also, something that can take some abuse! (Cause I have a lead foot)

The first HEMI's were in the 50's and were often badged *Red Ram* and some none HIMI's wore it also. There is very near me a 1954 sedan with a Red Ram HEMI, those heads are huge! This car has not been move in many years and drove to where it is setting.

FWIW the 413 was a"wedge" engine. It was never produced as a Hemi. Although it was produced with a very unique duel quad cross ram intake.

rwise,
That's a pic of the 413 with cross ram. It's clearly not a Hemi. The first Hemi's were in somewhere in the neighborhood of 330 CI, followed by the famed 392's which proceeded the legendary 426 Hemi.

In fact here's a great site for the Hemi's Story.

I agree a WRX is not a muscle car. Sport econo box yes.
Kids these days haven?t had the pleasure of mashing the pedal on a big block is why they are confused as to what a muscle car is. Old muscle cars were actually not that fast from the factory due to their crappy tires. Change the tires to some modern rubber and you have a different car.

My pick for an American performance car that is not that common would be a Buick Grand National.

Real Muscle Cars don't have power steering!

My dad has always been into hot rodding and has several cool cars. None have power steering or AC. He actually likes to modify the Chevy 250ci but does have a big block and a 383 equipped car. He was po'd with me when I yanked the straight six out of my 67 Chevelle and stuck a 454 in it. He really likes the stovebolt engines.

I also had a 1965, with the 273...with Cragar chrome rims.

I kept a magazine ad for that year, and get a kick out of the base price!

A lady in my town has a '66 Formula S. They did it right. Here husband said the resto cost them more than 60k.

The side shot, with the locking aftermarket gas cap, brought back memories!

I used to have my gas cap stolen...at least once every couple of months. I would resort to stealing some one else's, since the dealer only stocked chrome ones, and I was a stickler for the cap being painted to match the car!

To my way of thinking...the same dozen, or so, of these caps were simply being 'rotated' around Miami....

Nice ride!

While I don?t dream of this it's certainly uncommon. Sounds like it had some pretty high tech options for back then.

I didn't say that there were not big engines available in other cars back then from Chrysler, I just stated that they didn't put them in at the factory in the 64-66 Barracudas!!!!!

Real muscle cars have just standard equipment. No electric windows etc and they used "high test" I guess one inportant difference as to muscle cars as we know them and the "cars with muscle"today comes down to the engine compression. As all should know that in 1971/1972 the higher comp ratios were drastically reduced . Not too many "muscle cars" today have 10.5 to 1or close to it. As long as todays cars arent included with or called the same as being like the classic 60s cars its ok cause they can never be.

Excatly!!!
Race on Sunday, buy on Monday...Stripped down 1/4 mile monsters..
AND..Is it any wonder that Ford has brought back the stang to more resemble (albeit loosley) the look from yesterday? When the new Charger was introduced (even in 4 door, unholy!) it took off..And the new Challenger..Pretty close to the old lines..Why??? because that era of real muscle cars are timeless..I highly doubt Subaru will make a "throwback" WSX-watchamacallit turbo thing in 40 years........

p.s. I wanna date yer seeester too! lol
