Just do your homework as to value, find like vehicles for sale, etc. Provide them with maintenance records showing the vehicle was kept to a high standard.

MORE THAN FAIR with their total loss claims (even regular claims). Most offers were for more than we could ever sell a similar car for and we could ALWAYS find a similar vehicle for LESS than the insurance payout...

That was my experience nearly all the time in 10 years of auto adjusting. I was practically Santa Claus when it came to giving people WAY more money than their vehicles were worth. But with some laws in Illinois, and just a general fair approach to vehicle damage claims, the vehicle owner almost always came out ahead.

We haven't heard anything further from their insurance company yet and ours said they will come out and look at it this week.

That's not a good sign, on their part. I am thinking you'll end up settling with your carrier, and they'll pursue subrogation. Good luck.

In Michigan we have "no fault ins." even if it's the other guys fault your ins. still pays.

I had a 1993 Chevy Caprice wagon 100K at time of purchase, that was in great shape, paid $2200, drove 3 years and put 85K on it. Deer hit #1 they paid me $1900 for the repair. I put a new head light on and banged out the fender, Deer Hit #2 same corner of the car, they paid $3000 and totaled it. I stuck a head light on it and still drove it.

I bought a "New wagon" and was going to sell the totaled one but I had a tree fall on it:( Now it's my parts car.

I think you will find that they want to keep you happy, the settlement should be in your favor.

The other thing they did was offer two prices, one if they keep it and one if I kept it. I my case the difference was $300 less if I kept it.

If you can find and still want a like vehicle, try and keep the totaled one, part it out if you need to fix the new one and sell the other parts if you have the time and motivation. Have your son do it, you can make some money with a little effort.

The adjuster for my ins. company was here yesterday to inspect it, said he should have a price today. Like TW said, the adjuster indicated my company will most likely do the initial payout and then go after the other guy.

My ins company called today and and I can pick up a check tomorrow.

So far everything has gone fairly smooth, the price offered for the truck is very fair and at this point I have no complaints.

Now I need to go out and replace it, this will most likely be a little more work.

Picked up the check yesterday and bought a truck, its 1 year older, but with fewer miles.

Picking a truck to buy was the difficult part, I had a list of about forty that were good candidates, but after looking at a dozen or so I found one that would work for a very good price.

This is how it has always worked for me. Whenever I was in an accident, I would contact my insurance co and give them the other guys info. My ins would pay for the damages, no haggling, and get reimbursed from the other company.

I have to agree that insurance pays out more than what it costs to buy at a dealership... couple that with Michigan's stupid no-fault, and it equates to ridiculous rates...

Its always funny to me, to see other's who used to be in the insurance trade.... we always left it behind..lol
