Go get the biggest add on tranny cooler you can get for your explorer and then enjoy the boat. Likely cost under $200 for a big tranny cooler.

Re: Towing 3000lb boat OD off or on???

I have a 2002 ford Explorer 4.0 with a 5 speed auto. Most of them came with a massive front mount trans cooler. Mine has one, and it's a stripper XLS model. The 5R55E transmission is notoriously weak, and builds up heat quickly. I would definable tow with OD off. I ALWAYS turn off OD in my exploder, and keep it sloooooow. I upgraded my brakes to high quality aftermarket rotors and pads. The stopping power of the stock brakes wasn't good enough.

I use my exploder to tow a 21' cuddy to my ramp about 3 miles away on slow speed back roads. I would never ever take it out on an interstate. My boat is rated at 3300lbs dry, and I expect the entire boat/trailer combo to weigh just north of 5000lbs when fully loaded. I'm going to weigh it as soon as I can. The 4.0 exploder is rated at a max of 5500lbs towing capacity. If I'm over that, I'm going to start looking for F-150s for sale.

Towing an 18.5 Double Eagle with an F150. Gears are 3.55 but changed to 3.31 with tire size. I shut OD off and travel at 90km/h (55 mph). Otherwise it shifts constantly. OD is only for slight downhill.

i,m very stunned that towing just 3000lbs at all with an 4x4 SUV is worth a discussion.

such boats are towed here on single axle trailers with family sedans. whats wrong with us cars ?

So, we should discount what is better and our more stringent standards because you have lesser standards?

So, we should be telling you to drink crappy American light beers, because why do you need all that rich, full-bodied beer when a 60 calorie light, urine-colored beer will do just fine?

Lesser ain't better!

well, 3000lbs you tow easily with lets say this , i assure you without any fear of toasting the transmission or looking for aftermarket oil coolers.

so does a ford explorer 4x4 really has problems with this weight or is it just urine coloured fluid in the eyes of the driver calling it "more stringent standards" :D ?

chhers !

The Ford Exploder really is the "Natural Light" of tow vehicles. It's rated to tow only 3500lbs unless you have specific equipment, then it's only rated for 5500lbs. It's got a very weak transmission, and it's notoriously unstable. It's more of a minivan than a truck.
