Re: Trailer Security Devices

luckily my trailer also has a folding tongue. so I fold the tongue back and wrap a 3/4" x 6foot cryptonite cable lock around it. I have been meaning to research an alternate route to use two pins on the fold so that i can completely remove the tongue.

I use this method as well. Seems to be easy to do (for me) but also a good deterent to a would-be thief. I also put on a coupler lock, latch lock, and reciever hitch lock.

Re: Trailer Security Devices

Here's my setup. I bought a 4-pack of locks, a latch lock and a couple sections of 3/8 chain. I fold the tongue back and chain it against the frame, 2 locks go in the open holes from the swing tongue's pin, latch lock on the coupler, trailer wheel is chained to the frame tightly. Anyone driving by can see there are a bunch of locks on it and I think that's half the battle, (I hope). It's really easy to remove everything, it's my son's job.

On my old 73 tri-hull, I had no locks at all and no one ever touched it.. Probably though I'd make them take it with them if they did :D

I have never been a fan of the coupler lock (even though i run one)http://www.google.com/products/cata...X&ei=YEdgTqe1MdSIsALshcTuDw&ved=0CMUBEPMCMAk# Someone could always just back up to it, tighten the safety chains to the pickup and lower the jack.... and away they go! Chains thru a wheel and frame are a good idea too, but like stated earlier... it's just there to slow someone down. If they want it, they will take it. Usually i just run the coupler lock and never worry about a thing.

Sweet idea, I will definitely do this one as well. Thanks.

Not as great an idea as you think. Look UNDER the coupler! See the nut??? If that nut is removed, the latch comes out, the ball drops out and tongue weight alone will keep the coupler on the ball until the thief can simply replace the coupler or transfer the boat to another trailer. There isn't a chain made that a hefty bolt cutter won't cut. Fact is, if they want the boat bad enough, they will get it. That said -- a silent alarm (or a loud one if that's your pleasure) and a shotgun makes the best security.

On top of all that, the nut on the trailer hitch ball is there for the "un-screwing"...... I've always wondered the purpose of a trailer lock on the trailer while attached to the vehicle if all the thief needs is a large trailer ball wrench......he can just use your ball on his hitch and be gone with your trailer.

Locks only keep honest people.....honest. That's all.

My trick is to get a boat that is too big for the average crackhead to pull with his 83 ranger and leave it unlocked :D

What theyhave een aroud here is low units being stolen, they take themin less than 5 min, one marina had 10 stolen in one night. Worse part is that when they are done there is allot of damage done to the boat.

For safety purposes, while towing, don't use a lock on the tongue. The trailer should be able to be removed by you or rescue personnel with the least amount of effort.

As for me I leave the bedroom window open and sleep lightly. By law I'm now allowed to shoot the thief to protect my property. I love that law.

Lol, me too....In Texas, if it's at night and a thief is in your house, you can shoot him if he's coming at you or running away from you.....either way you're jusitified in capping his *****.

This is my first post on iBoats. I would get some kind of cheap portable garage with walls. I would stick with all of the locks as well, but you know the saying "out of sight, out of mind". Plus you add in the protection you get from the elements.

Just my $0.02

okay... kind of a stupid suggestion but just get an old junker car to park in front of it. Easier to make the car so it is very difficult to move. Block the boat in so it can't be towed until the vehicle is moved.

Re: Trailer Security Devices

I park my boat & trailer with a fold away tongue facing my garage door and my tow vehicle parked next to in on the other side of the driveway. If you want it you've got to push the tongue jack through my sandy yard, find a bolt for the swing away, and then cut the lock from the coupler. If you can do all of that the boat is yours. I have replacement coverage insurance as my backup from Progessive.

I wanted to see if anyone has ever used this product. I leave my boat at my lake property and have a lock on the tongue of the trailer and several chains run through the wheels and locked to a solid tree. I feel like it is fairly safe this way but it is a hassle getting the chains unlocked and free from the boat each time I want to use it.

This product seems to be a nice option, so I was just wondering if anyone else out there has used them or if they think they will be sufficient theft deterrent.

Believe me I know that nothing is going to stop someone if they really want it. Just trying to make it as difficult as possible.

Thanks for any input.

I bought a similar wheel boot for my trailer, though mine has a disc that covers up the lugs. Thing ran me around 300 bucks. Along with the two locks on the coupler there's not much more I can do short of hiring the boat its own bodyguard. Like most have stated, if somebody really wants it they'll get it. I just wont make it easy for em.

Fold tung then put a lock pin (normally used for my cuppler) through the where th folding pin would go. Unless you can pick the lock, good luck taking my trailer without a extra neck or tow truck

Re: Trailer Security Devices

For the winter time I also put the trailer up on jack stands. Run a heavy duty cable through the frame and stick a U bolt lock (like you use for locking bikes) through the wheel. There is a advantage with being in my garage. If you really wanted to go through all the trouble of taking my boat then you wanted it more then me. I would just have to call WestMar and see about an insurance claim.
