Transom Capacity

I want to buy a 2002, 23 ft. Pro Line WA Cuddy. Propulsion wise, I have narrowed it down to either one 225 hp Yamaha four-stroke, or two 130 hp Honda four-strokes. I like the idea of two outboards, cause where I might be going fishing I would just feel better having a second motor.
The max horsepower rating for this boat is 300, so either way I am under this limit. However, the single engine is approx. 600 lbs., and the twin Honda’s total about 1000 lbs. As I would prefer the two engine scenario, I am concerned about there being 400 more lbs. on the transom. Is there a max transom weight capacity, and if so how close will I be to it with the twins, and how will that affect handling, loading, cg, etc. If someone can enlighten me, I would appreciate it.

Big ole howdy to ya MartinJ and welcome to the best boating board on the web.
If you'll look at the USCG approval tag on/in your boat, it'll give you the maximum weight capacity for your boat. That oughta give you clue about how much engine weigh it'll handle. Is it a 25" transom? Hope so.
Lettus know how you go.

c/6

Hooty

martinj,

I am not a big fan of twins. Too much complexity, weight and expense.

A single 130 will not plane that boat. Even if you're down to one running 130, you're coming in at displacement speeds only. I would go with the 225 and a 25-30 hp. four stroke kicker.

Save some money, a bunch of weight, and still get that "get home" assurance.

Even if you have one good 130

Re: Transom Capacity

Displacement speed means the speed at not being on plane. A single 130 won't get you on plane with that size boat.

I would go for the single 225 if it were my boat. It will be cheaper in many different ways.

Go with the 225 or even a 250, If it's return ins. you want ,get a kicker engine. Also get towboat or seatow.
