HI,
I am getting ready to put the new wood in the transom of my 75 Wreidt Spoiler.
I am replacing the transom from the inside.

I have removed all the old wood and roughed up the surface. Now I realize I have a problem:

How do I make a piece of wood that will fit? I have used heavy construction paper and cut it to something approximating the shape of the transom for a template, but it isn't perfect.
what is the best method to make a template?

also on a side note I saw in another post to use a respirator approved for expoxy dust? I have been using a fiberglass/sanding mask(has 2 straps), I have not seen any respirators specifically saying anything about epoxy. can anybody give me a "niosh" specification about what type of respirator to use? I can still smell the epoxy when I grind it(smells good!)

thanks,
Josh

Re: transom template/mold???

If you can't use the old one as a pattern then usually it is measure, measure, and measure some more to get the approximate shape and size.....before you rip out the old one.

Cardboard makes a pretty good template. Don't know if you took any measurements before you ripped the old stuff out but hopefully you did. If not, then maybe you can measure the imprint of where the old transom was as you can probably still see the area where it was at even with the roughing up.

Drawing the straight edges on the template is usually not the problem, it is drawing the curves and/or angles. Maybe you can find something that is close to the angle of the curve and use it as a guide to help draw it on your template.

Other than that, I am out of ideas. Just get it as close as you can to what you think the original was and if that is the best you can do, so be it.

Sorry, can't help you right off hand with the respirator thing but sure someone on here can.

Good luck!

Re: transom template/mold???

thanks,
I did the cardboard template and it worked pretty good. I made a new transom from 3/4 fir. I slid it in there(replacing from inside) and found it to be about 1/2 cm short along the top and the same along the perimeter. I think it will be ok? I don't know, this is a first for me. It isn't a load bearing transom(jet drive).

What you want is a "particulate" filter. This will keep the epoxy and fiberglass dust out of your throat and lungs. N105H to NIOSH 42 CFR 84. Iboats has a simple mask that will work 3M 8511 Particle Respirator I would prefer a half face respirator with the add-on filter. 3M model 3M 2091 or 3M 5N11 N95.
I'm no filter guru, just a guy that built an epoxy/glass boat that got sick from not using the right protection. Learned the hard way but better now.

I think that right off hand it should be ok. Maybe others will comment and confirm.

I have an old Hondo jet that has given me many years of fun. Hope that you enjoy it!
