Re: Tri-Hull Boats

My 1970 Seasprite 15' 1977 85hp Johnson has been outstanding for what I use it for. Tubbing I can turn on a dime get that tube slung out there.Fishing have no problem getting into trees or up shallow it takes me were I need to be. It can pound you when its rough out but I usaly just go slower.Ivoted love it . Its my first boat had it for 9 years now.

Any boat is a compromise. They all have their strengths and weaknesses. To group all trihulls in one category is difficult as they can range from a 8' yacht tender to 27' boston whaler.

Hey Reelfishin, take a look at my avitar, look familiar?

I am planning to get it in the water this weekend. I hope it rides as nice as you say. Guess I am a bit over powered with the 115 on it, even though it is rated for 135.

Overpowered? Bah!
There are 2 things that you can never have too much of, water under your keel and horsepower under the hood.:D

Your avitar looks like the one I just got.

I wouldn't worry about being overpowered, it's just that they're light boats and don't need much to get up and on plane. I gutted mine to make it even lighter, so yours may well need more power to 'feel' right. I have a good 90 hp V4 that I can use if needed, as well as 135hp. The way I see it, if your hanging a V4, there's no more weight in a 135 than in a 90 or 115, so why not. But I doubt I'd ever use that extra power for what I am doing with that boat. I'm sure the ride quality could be severely compromised to say the least at the speeds that 135hp I have would push that boat too. I have no doubt that boat would hit 50 or better with the 135 hp V4, and at that speed, it would most likely beat you near to death in some choppy water.

I was in a Glastron trihull, about a 1970 or so, which was powered by a 140 Evinrude V4, on a windy day in the bay, the driver had no comprehension of what he was doing to that boat. He ran it full throttle all day slamming every wave he crossed. The seats were caving in under us and I have no doubt that boat hit 50+ that day. More than once, the prop came out of the water as the boat jumped from swell to swell.
It wouldn't have mattered what type of hull at that speed but the trihull effect was no doubt evident in that case.
The Glastron had no where's near the free board that the Starcraft has either.

Re: Tri-Hull Boats

I love my tri-hull boat. I have a 16' Winchester CC for fishing Pamilco River and Sound in Eastern North Carolina. It is also worthy on those calm days to hit the inlet and bust out to the ocean.

This boat rides great in a chop! I have only owned it for over a month and I am in love. Perfect little fishin boat. I havent tested her in the ocean yet, but a buddy of mine had one and he gave his boat a "beating". Some people around here say "these boats are unsinkable".

This tri-hull rides great and is built tuff. I have road on one another tri-hull that was very similiar to my boat (16' Dixie)......And it handles great as well!

Happy Easter, Boating and Fishing!!!

Re: Tri-Hull Boats

My 1981 Silverline is a tri-hull.

I agree, they are ugly.

I do like the width and shallow draft.

I spend lots of time on Lake Michigan, the biggest waves I've been in were breaking three footers.

I was scared, my passengers were not.

I didn't tell them I was scared until we got to port.

I wish it was a v-hull every time I'm in big water. Or trying to turn under full throttle. I can feel it slip and not "grab" the water and cut.

Everyone is saying keep the nose up, and in rough waters you'll be fine...

Well, I don't do that. I trim down, and go full throttle. Most of the time I can skip across pretty well.
