Yea, vaseline is usually applied by hand.

Haha. One of the best parts of using vaseline on my boat was getting to see the female cashier's face when I strolled up to the register with a 12 pack and a huge tub of vaseline.

Astroglide works Better! ;)

Makes me wonder what astroglide would do to oxidized gel coat. I don't think the Admiral would be too happy if she saw me walking out of the house to go "work on the boat" with astroglide in one hand and a cooler of beer in the other.

Hey jacalore, I'm the one who suggested Vaseline, and get crucified by this forum each time! By the way, I forgot to tell you that Vaseline works great on chrome, or nickel plated fittings, aluminum windshield frames, decals, & upholstery as well!

Yep, didn't believe it either. I'm a convert now.

Look at the photo I posted... that cloudy maroon area in the middle is original. The rest is finished with vaseline.

WOW! You have the slickest boat around, in more ways than one.
I wonder if it will attract dirt and dust now?

Nope. When you wipe it off, the goo goes and the shine stays. It looks wet, but is perfectly dry. You can even wax over it.

One worse.
12 pack of beer for me.
large tub of Vaseline for the rear fenders of my drag car to stop the rubber from sticking.
Tampons for the wife.
Yeah, I got the raised eyebrow my the cashier. Me being dumb, didnt click until I got in to the truck in the parking lot.
I know vaseline does wonders for a friend of mine old faded out red Ford truck, hes been doing it for years. But I never would have thought it would work on gelcoat?
Thanks for the tip.

Your drill will likely not get the job done. However, you can get a 7" variable speed polisher from HF for about $25 with a coupon.

I don't know much about this Vaseline idea, seems a bit like a temporary job when the real issue is the oxidation underneath.

You need a rotary polisher, maybe wetsand 1500-2000, some quality products (I am using 3M compound on mine), followed up by polish, and a coat of wax/ sealant. (3-4 Steps).

Good Luck.

I will be going back over mine this summer with 3M Finesse-It II. However, my 1st go round (20 months ago), I had great results just using $8 Turtle wax cutting compound and $10 Maguires for polishing. It came out so well that I didn't even put any wax on it. It is still a nice deep shiny red, but I will polish again with the 3M just for good measure. I am guessing it should only take an hour or 2 since it is already in good shape.

What do you mean oxidation underneath? Vaseline removes the oxidation, it just wipes off between coats. Then restores the protective silicon to the finish. Most finishes have silicon in them, so you're just eliminating that step. Plus when dry, you can wax, or polish right over this for durability.

It doesnt remove the oxidation. It just moistens it. The only way to remove oxidation is by abrasive means.
Its kinda hard for vaseline to restore the silicone to the finish when it doesnt contain silicone.

If it's shiny and doesn't make a mess, and lasts for a decent length of time, who cares? I'd rather spend the additional time it would take to do it "right" on something else.

I dont know why you are taking offense to my comment but, if there is something that I can do to make my boat look like new with minimal effort, count me in. After all, What little spare time I have I would rather not spend in working on my boat. I try to do things the correct way within reason if possible. But if buffing was not an option, You bet I would be buying some vaseline.
