Re: trihulls? good or no good?

well, lots to consider. but my thoughts are as follows...
-i have a v-hull and i really like it too, but the down side to having a closed v-hull is there is allmost no space to move around. sure, if its just me going fishing is the best. but if i take the old lady, we really cant do much. i have never ridden in a tri-hull, and i appreciate all the informative insight on the matter, all i have done so far is get up in one that was on a trailer. the amount of room you get in the open front was the coolest, and perfect for setting a bass seat in, and lots of room for gear too. and because they are allmost flat on bottom, i think it would a be a perfect river boat. as the rivers i normally go on are shallow, but calm. i plan on getting an older glastron ( 70-75 ) probably a 15' to start off with.

p.s. the first place i plan on taking it once im sure it floats, is , lees fairy... right in the grand canyon. for its world famous rainbow trout. ive been there several times, just never in my own boat.. cant wait.

If you were up in my neck of the woods, there are a billion tri-hulls in my junk-for-sale rag. Cheap too.

Re: trihulls? good or no good?

When i was a kid my Dad had a 1979 18 foot Invador tri hull bowrider. I remember that boat would pound your teeth out in any sort of chop.

My old flats boat (1955 model year) was a tri hull and anything more then about 1 foot was horrible to ride on. I took green water over the bow of this boat more then a dozen times btw. (fast moving storm that ended up sinking a couple dozen boats, i sought shelter behind a mangrove island and she never sank:) )

My current 16.5 foot v hull bowrider rides way better then the tri hulls in all water.

Only good thing of the tri hulls in the past was they were very stable at rest.

later,

Big-E

well out here in az, there is rarely a storm, and the wind is by the clock at 11am then again at like 4pm. so i usually fish the coves at those times to avoid the winds. and most of our lakes are in canyons or in the middle of mountains, so wind isnt usually a problem.

I see lots of old classic tri-hulls on lakes and rivers. Don't see them on the salt.

If you just want a pleasure cruiser for fair weather cruising, they are a nice boat.

Well Zuke man, you ain't been in Texas. The canyon lakes, and there are several in central TX (several guys that write on here fishing there), have 360 degree 24/7 (almost) wind....naw gales!

No matter where you go to hide it follows you and always is in your face when you head home. How the wind can be blowing out of the south and west at the same time baffles me.

Glad you can hide from yours.

Mark

Re: trihulls? good or no good?

In my younger years I took a 14' tri-hull out into the ocean in 2 flag weather, and that thing did great out there. A friend wanted to get sea sick, and it was a perfect day for it. But in any case, that boat handled really well in that bad weather, and was just as good on a glass lake.

Re: trihulls? good or no good?

well, it was a tough battle. but i now have my 15' 1972 glasstron tri-hull. so be on the look out for my many new questions all around the forums.

just one new thing....
i new the floor was bad. but when i got the boat home, my dad swore he heard water sloshing around a bit, so upon further investigation, it was found that there was infact water under the wood floor/carpet, and it has probably been there for years. other than the flooring being ruined, does anybody think this will have a big negative effect on the boats structural integrity? is there anything in particular i should look for???

lots more questions to come..

thank you all for your assistance in my boating hobby.
zuke

let's see the pics!

Water in the boat won't threaten the structural integrity of the hull - but check out the link to JasonJ's skanky beast project above - it contains an excellent step by step tutorial on fixing your floor.

Re: trihulls? good or no good?

If it is anything like the Glastron I had, pull the floor up, check the stringers. That is what gives your boat its structural integrity, along with the floor. If the floor is rotted, and there is water below deck, chances are you will find some soft stringers. Glastron did a good job of glassing everything in well, but water finds a way!!! After I replaced my stringers and re-glassed, I shot a couple of coats of paint on everything to help seal up the poly.

Re: trihulls? good or no good?

you said that you had to re-glass you stringers in? my buddy said that you could aslo use an epoxy paint. is that true?

Re: trihulls? good or no good?

They need to be glassed-in in order to attach them to the hull. The epoxy paint will seal up the pores in the poly but will not adhere the stringers to the hull.
