I have twin 1998 alpha drives on my boat. One drive all the sudden will not go down. I was able to get it to up with the trailer button but not down? If I use the trim button on my shifter it makes the noise like it is working but it will not go down at all.

Any tips please.

Have you checked the oil level in the reservoir?

yea the tank resevoir is half full from what i can see. Its a 270 sea ray with twins packed in there and you can not see the pump at all. To even try and wiggle the connections on the pump takes alot alot of effort. Horrible place to mount the pump!!!

If it's running, wiggling the wires isn't going to do anything. The fact that it's running means the electrical is ok.

Have someone jump on the drive, it may just be stuck in the position from leaving it pressurized when up.

The boat is in the water now and it was working fine. I did rest my body weight on the outdrive and push down pretty good with no luck it is still stuck up.

Ayuh,.... Are the props in the water at all,..?? Use the thrust to push down, when runnin' the pump down....

When ya raise the drives, 'n it hits the point where the pump loads up, 'n ya hear it Labor,.?.?.

Tap the Down button, to Unload the valvin'... less apt to get Stuck,...

or have your, uh...largest, friend stand on the drive while you try trimming it down

the more down force you have the better chance of unsticking it

or like bondo says, if its not ALL the way up, use the thrust of the drive in gear while running to help trim it in

The prop is in the water it is a twin engine sea ray 270 so even all the way up the props do not come out of the water, I did not want to try and drive it with as high as the drive is though it is all most all the way up and im afraid the main shaft is so far out of the gimble that it could strip the spline gears or some thing. I did stand on it very hard myself today and no luck.

Please help this is so annoying!

Get the boat out of the water so you can check some things.

More easy said than done im in central IL and we are flooded here so bad there is not a ramp I can use for about another week at least and the fork truck cant get me either for over a week.

It would sure be more easy though to have it out of the water.

Out of the water you can look to see if something has it jammed in the up position, plus you can take the trim rams loose from the drive and see if one of them is jammed.

Electrical issues can always be puzzeling. Getting it out of the water is the best as Don mentioned. I had an issue which turned out to be the electrical connector at the pump. This may not be your issue do to sometimes it runs but will not move, but it could be in part. Maybe a relay/switch went bad and is making incorrect conntions, weird I know but it can happen over time and corresion.

I will wait to our flood conditions go down so i can pull it out. Im guess one of the rams is stuck. How can I check to see if it is a stuck Ram when I get it out of water?

Remove the hydraulic lines and see if it moves. I'm guessing it has something to do with corrision. For it to just stop working its more then likely a valve not moving or an electrical condition.

Ok i will pop both lines off and let it bleed down I HOPE! If so i will not be putting that drive up to far again or I will just see what valving is sticking.

Sounds like the ram is stuck though!

I'm no expert by any means, but I was looking at the system diagram for my alpha drive and there's a shuttle valve in the pump assembly that opens a poppet valve on the return line to allow the fluid to exit the ram from the low pressure side. Could that shuttle be sticking?

That sounds like it could be the issue!!! Can you describe where that valve is my unit is so hard to get to because of the location of the pump in my engine compartment.

Ayuh,.... Inside the pump itself...

Re: Trim goes up but not down and sounds like its working?

shuttle valves rarely stick. they commonly have 20-100 times more square inches than the poppet. In many OMC systems, the shuttle doesn't even have a sealing oring.
common hydraulic problems that cause a failure to lower .... debris gets stuck in one of the fluid intake balls and the gearplate simply pumps the fluid through both inlets without generating any pressure - the manual release valve is a tapered plug with two or more oring that separate the up, down, and bypass circuits. If the MRV becomes damaged it can short out the down and bypass circuits causing a system to lift but not lower - the system does not have a tilt limit and is raised hard against its stop creating extremely high internal pressure. a typical pump will have 20-30% higher pressure when the trim motor is spinning. When the pump spins in opposite direction the internal bypass or regulator on down circuit pops open before overcoming the internal pressure in up circuit.

I think, Don is most likely right in his initial analysis. If the motor is spinning but the system won't lower then look for mechanical problems first. when pumps break they usually bleed off pressure and gravity pulls down the engine on its own.
