Re: Trim Guage

Hi Sandollar..

The sending unit was built into the Port Cylinder on those TNT units. Look for a terminal on that cylinder if it's a stock TNT unit.

The Yellow/Gray lead comes off the recitifier. That would be located on the Starboard side of the engine.

Hope we've helped.

Thanks OutBoardJim, But what is a stock TNT?
Also what does the sender unit look like? The 1979 evinrude 55HP is original outboard so should it have a sending unit and what do I need to connect the trim guage besides the trim gauge? Thanks alot OutBoardJim!!

Re: Trim Guage

TNT means Trim N' Tilt. Back then, these were an add on you had to order with the motor. If you look at the engine, and if equipped with TNT, there should be two hydraulic cylinders between the transom brackets with a TNT motor and reservoir mounted to the starboard transom bracket. Look for a stud with a nut and rubber cover on the Port cylinder. The sending unit was built into the cylinder so all you see is a stud and nut.

If you find this stud, connect the post on the TNT gauge marked "S" or signal to the post on the cylinder. The "I" or ignition to a 12 volt source and the "G" or ground to a good battery ground.

Re: Trim Guage

Sandollar...if yer goin ta do this yerself, ya' really need ta' get a service manual. The generics are OK and ya' can get them here from iboats. If you want the real OEM service manual which is the preferred manual, check the link below. Will cost ya' a few bucks more, but may be worth it in the long run.

http://ww3.kencook.com/evinrudejohnsonmanuals/

Good Luck!!
