Hi again :)

I have posted a questione re oil up in the armature of my trim motor.

Any advice on that would be greatly appreciated.

As a follow-on issue. The trim pump is obviously not working until i can get it rebuilt/serviced etc.

My question is - if i reinstall the pump, and all hydraulic cables, then bleed the sytem by lifting the leg by hand for a few cycles, is it then concievable/safe to then re-tighten the fill screw and vent screw having set the leg in a useable position.

I would rather do this than strap the leg down, (which i know would be stupid but we only use it on a river at 4 mph) because presumably the leg would be able to come up if we did happen to hit something - due to the built in safety feature of the tilt cylinders.

Again any input would be appreciated guys.

Cheers

the leg would also come up when you put it in reverse.

There are motors for that vintage available, and a good Pool Pump, Electric Motor/Altenator/Snow Plow Service place may be able to fix the motor.

And I dont think you'll be able to "bleed" the system manually.

Maybe think about having the 2 lines (inside the boat) go into a bottle of oil/hydraulic fluid not attached to the trim pump. In that manner you can bleed the system, then attach the pump or leave like that..

You can Tie a rope to the tilt pin at the aft section of the drive up to say a railing or thru the center ski tie/D-ring and lift your drive that way, and tie it of when needed, and lower when needed.

cheers buddy

see your point re bleeding - very true.

on the reversing issue - if the system could be bled - surely the reverse lock valve would take care of that?

any thoughts?

cheers bud

Re: Trim question please - pre-alpha 1972 leg.

yea.. the reverse lock should take care of most of it, but I wonder how much, as I think it's pressurized a little bit..

I've been without a rev' lock for a while so I forgot about it..

to bad we didn't meet up a couple months ago... I'd send you one of my motors.. i might stil have 1 or 2 but need to keep a backup for mine.

There is a place here in Massachusetts called Chelmsford Auto Electric.. VERY VERY good !!! been there for a long time !! and know those pumps very well !!!

might be worth $20 shipping the motor to them they will fix or rebuild depending on what you want.

Fixing being cheaper to rebuilding, I think they also sell new but are a little more $$ then some marine shops.

cheers again bud

i'm in the UK tho - i know i can get an aftermarket part for 180 - but we only potter about on the river - so its at the bottom of the wishlist for a while (below quite a few essentials) :D

any idea why oil would have gone up from the reservoir into the trim motor housing mate?

if its a sign that a seal in the reservoir has gone I won't bother reinstalling the pump for the temp fix we are discussing here, as no doubt as soon as there is any pressure in the system it would pee oil straight out of the top of the motor housing anyway.

what you reckon mate?
