Trim sending unit

I got a Mercury motor (1989 150HP) that didn't have the trim sender on it where the two screws are on the left side of the tilt and trim unit bracket.

I bought a trim sender used, but does the tab that goes in the slot of the shaft rotate in the sender body, or is the whole plastic part supposed to rotate under the mounting screw heads? In other words, should I be able to grasp the tab, holding the sending unit body, and turn it?

The mounting screws go through the two ears on the sender body, and they're slotted. Does the whole body of the sender unit rotate under the mounting screws (which would mean not to tighten them all the way down to allow for movement)?

Yes...

No. The slots are for final adjustment. You set the sender up so that when the engine is trimmed fully down the gauge reads fully down. The securing screws should be tightened down onto the slots. The sender body doesn't move.

Okay, I understand the tab slots then are used to adjust the position indication on the gauge, then tighted down. Do I also understand that you're saying if I hold the sender in one hand, then try to turn the dial (tab), it doesn't move? Does that mean that theres a sealed movement that has a mercury switch or some sort of attitude-sensing device, so that when the shaft is rotated (the one through the mounting bracket with the slotted end where the sender mounts), the internals of the sensor give the voltages for the trim indicator gauge?

I ask because when I try to turn the tab in the sender body, it doesn't move.

I have never been able to move one with my fingers either. You may need to use a tool, like a spanner, or (carefully) a pair of pliers.

Okay, Chris. That means it does rotate in the body of the sender, but it's not an easy-to-turn maneuver with your fingers. I think rather than break or chew up the tab, I'll install it and then test it that way?
