I've got an older Johnson 175 motor, had it out last weekend ran great. Brought it home and parked it. My brother was cleaning it and he adjusted the setting of the motor angle and now the electric lift won't work, anyone have any ideas?

Re: trim trouble

I tried puting more oil in it, changed the ciliniod, jaking the motor up to help get it started, checked the wiring and even taping on the trim motor. But it still won't work. Was wondering if there was anything else I could try before I take it all apart?

has nothing to do with washing it, but just an idea b4 you dismantle, have you checked the fuse in the solenoid box?

Yes I did that too. Someone told me it may have an air bubble or dirt in it, do you have any idea how to bleed the system? I tried taking the oil plug out and hitting the switch but it didn't seem like it did anything.

Re: trim trouble

Well to test the trim motor to see if that in deed is the trouble, run a booster cable from the top two posts in the solenoid box, the power(red) post to the trim up(blue) post. The motor should automatically raise up when this is done, assuming of course you have power at the solenoid, which can be tested with a test light, gl

Re: trim trouble

I tried jumping it like you said and it does the same thing as when I push the switch (I didn't explain it good enough) The motor on the trim runs but it doesn't lift or lower the boat motor. I talked to a guy at the local marina and he said maybe the shaft on the motor was broke, I don't see how that would have happened just sitting there. I geuse I was hopping it was something simple before I had to tear it all apart because that looks like it's a major job.

Re: trim trouble

If you do tear out the trim motor, its really not that bad. Raise you motor all the way up and put the mounts down to hold it there. There are i believe 3 bolts on either side, a 14mm wrench or socket if i do remember correctly. youll have to disconnect a little tube on the bottom with a small wrench, along with all the wiring on the top, and with a little elbow grease, or a mallet, lol, it should come out. Try bringing it to a small motor repair shop or something llike that b4 you go and buy a new one, it may be cheaper. It still seems funny though that it would just give out like that from just getting washed, unless your brother was washing it with a sledgehammer, lol gl

Re: trim trouble

Thanks for all your help. I just have one more question, how do I raise the motor? I tried jaking it up with a jack but it just lifts the back of the boat off the ground. I looked for some kind of a manual release but I couldn't find anything. Again, I really apriciate all your help!!!
