Easy: Run it all the way down, then trim up till it stops. Measure center to center on the cylinder bolts. For an alpha 1, should be 21 3/4 inches (Gen II 20 3/4 inches). If it is too long turn the switch clockwise all the way. Run the outdrive all the way down again, then up till it stops. Hhave someone hold the trim up switch and SLOWLY turn the switch CCW till you hit the 21 3/4 +- 1/4 inch. Tighten it down then run it down and back up to check it. Good luck.

... I just went and purchased a solder gun and some shrinks and am going to see if I can reconnect them. Not sure how long that will hold but I figured it is worth a shot and it has never worked anyways so I don't have much to lose.

You will not be able to solder those wires. Once they've been wet the copper corrodes and won't 'tin'. The best way (but unfortunately not the cheapest ) is to stump up the dollars and get a new kit. They are also a bit of a PITA to install, but at least they'll be working...

Thanks Stonyloam, I set it to the 21 3/4 inches, looks kinda low but I guess that just cause its sitting in the driveway. :) In the trailer up position (all the way up) it measured 26".

Thanks Chris, I actually had already soldered them before I saw your post. I hooked it up and got some movement out of the gauge so I think the solder worked, but I am sure it will not last. Anyways even getting some movement on the inside of the sender one of the little copper V arms that makes contact had snapped off, I tried bending up the remaining piece so that this would make contact. When going down it seems the gauge wants to work right but then once I go back up the gauge just starts bouncing around from up to down and going all crazy ( I assume it is because the little V arm is no longer there and it is not sliding across the contact correct. Oh well, I gave it a shot ... and now I have a solder gun. :) Anyways thanks for all the help guys, I think I can stop asking questions on this thread now :p
