Re: trim wires?

There are no trim light switches, no trim lights at all. You have a trim limit switch, and a trim gauge sender.
Use your ohm meter to determine which wires go to what. If it is either off or on, it's the trim limit switch. If it has variable readings, then it's the sender for the gauge.

Re: trim wires?

The sender is just a variable resistor. It doesn't matter which black wires goes where, but one goes to ground, the other to the 'S' terminal on the back of the trim gauge. What engine do you have and what year is it? (serial number is better). The bullet connector plugs into a coloured wire in the engine harness. With the serial number I can tell you the colour of the wire... And then that colour wire comes out of the instrument harness and hooks to the gauge, but I need that engine serial number....

Re: trim wires?

the engine is a 1974 gm 250 inline 6 165hp the stern drive is a MC 1? and as for where you say the bullet connector plugs into the colored wire well there isn`t any bullet connector on any of the wires from the stern drive both the trim sender and trim light switch both have black wires no bullet connectors on them and going off what the seloc book says even tho it doesn`t show much in it about them other than how to adjust them.. the selco book i have is number 3200

Re: trim wires?

My Seloc manual for that engine is from 1988. It has wiring diagrams in the appendix at the back. The trim tilt system is a separate diagram from the engine wiring. Does yours have anything similar?

Re: trim wires?

it only shows for the trim sender that goes to the gage but thats it the trim sender doesn`t have any other color other than black i know on my old boat it had a purple wire on it that had a plug but for some reason this one does not have that. also on my old boat it had seperate sender unit on top ot the transum looked more like a cyclender of sort but that boat is gone but i kept all the parts from it the one i finished rebuilding is an 80 arrowglass

Re: trim wires?

...what the seloc book says ...

can not be trusted!!! End of story.

HERE is a link to a downloadable copy of the OEM manual. You'll find it far more accurate...

Ok, that's precisely why I asked for an engine serial number/year. Back then the trim sender was attached to the inside of the transom, at the top of the inner transom plate. It's operated hydraulically, and the limit switch (you're calling 'light' for some reason) is inside the top of the gimbal ring and actuated by a raised section on the bell housing.

The wires from the sender...

attachment.php

Should be a couple of black leads from it, one with a purple sleeve on it. They should have either bullet connectors or rings on the end. There is a spare wire in the harness, taped off which is purple. You can use that are the feed for the trim gauge, or you can run a new wire from the transom to the instrument cluster, your choice.

The limit switch connects into the trim pump harness and (when it was working) limits the UP trim available. When that limit is reached, the way to get the drive into the TRAILER or FULL UP position is to press the UP and UP/OUT buttons together, depending on which trim control panel you have...

A picture of the trim sender, gimbal ring and trim control panel will help us help you....

My Seloc manual ...

Throw that piece of rubbish in the bin... If you want the right manuals, tell me the engine and drive you have, and their serial numbers and I'll post a link to the OEM manuals for you....

Re: trim wires?

My book shows the gauge sender going to a purple wire in the engine harness, and the limit switch goes to a purple and a blue in the separate harness for the tilt/trim system. The other on the gauge sender goes to ground. All four wires from the out drive are black.
If necessary I could scan the diagram tomorrow and post it, but I don't think it would help any more than this.

Your book doesn't cover his set-up. He has the old style trim sender, an hydraulic ram mounted on the inside of the transom. Your book only covers the new style gimbal ring mounted sender and switch.....

Re: trim wires?

thats what my boat has is the 2 senders on the gimbal my old boat was a 1974 carravell baracuda that had the power trim unit i scraped that boat and put the motor in the 80 arrowglass i left the gimbal unit on the arrow and just put my stern and engine on the arrow and the arrow didnt have a power trim unit on it but like i said i did keep all the parts from the old boat before i scraped it.

Which engine package are you working on? We don't care what boat it's going into....

Ok... IF you're planning on using the gimbal housing that is on the boat (arrow-something), and it has the trim senders on the outside (on the gimbal ring) you'll find 4 black wires coming through the transom assembly. those wires are pairs, and they should still be pairs. One pair it the trim sender, and it goes to the gauge. As I said before, it doesn't matter which one of the pair goes to the gauge and which one goes to ground, and long as they do. The other pair is the limit switch, again it's just a switch, so which of the 2 wires goes to each of the connectors on the trim pump harness doesn't matter, just as long as they are both plugged in.

Ok.. the old style senders from the original boat.... You don't need them, because you're using the transom assembly with the new style senders....

So, you have the old engine, old drive, new style transom housings? ok... A 1980 boat that didn't have power trim? I think all Mercruisers had power trim by then... What's missing?
