trolling motor mounting question

I have an old starcraft aluminum that I am redoing. I am cutting the front deck off and fabbing up a casting deck. I havent cut the front off yet. I am wondering how much coaming to leave in the front to mount a foot controlled motor. I dont have a motor yet, I know the newer ones take up a little less space (small footprint). If I come across a good used one, I will probably nab it up, so I will go on the basis that it will be of the older style mounts. I guess question might be a little confusing, I can post pics if need be. Right now, I have about 17 inches left of the front. How wide are the mounts also? All sizes can be approximate.......

Can't visualize what you are working on, Willy. Pix would help a lot.

MotorGuide electric steer and MinnKota power drives have the smallest footprint. They are roughly 8 inches wide and about 12 - 14 inches long.

Don't forget to consider your wiring while you have things apart. I would run #6 up there to cover any motor you may want to use.

Was trying to get an idea of the footprint. I still have some time before I cut the deck. Just tryin to plan ahead a little. Maybe momma will let me get an income tax return present in the form of a trolling motor!!!!!!!!!! Still contemplating what kind of bracing I am gonna do up front for it also. once the deck is cut, I will continue the coaming up to the front........

one more thing I just remembered about waiting till you have the motor Is that many times I plan out project, I change plans once I have my hands on it. I get in to the project and decide on the fly that all my planing and thinking isnt right. Something always needs to be bigger, smaller or placed in a different spot.

This is the way my boat was set up. Looks a little unusual but seems to work just fine. I do like how it is clear of the anchor line. The mounting plate appears to be 1/4" and there is a spacer underneath. 3 bolts hold it down two run directly thru the frame. Just thought I'd throw it out there for an optional idea.kota mount 2.jpg

you are very correct. and i really recommend, the wireless remote control motors. i will never go back to a foot control motor.
