Trolling motor question

I have a slightly older (1997 or 1998 model) bow mounted Motorguide foot controlled trolling motor that has a big dent in it around the top part of the shaft and it's almost impossiable to turn it in either direction now. It's mounted in the Gatormount that came with it and I was wanting to know what is needed to switch to a newer hand controlled model and still use the Gator mount that is already mounted. Also any problem with using a MinnKota model with the mount. This is on a pontoon and the foot controll just got in the way so I'm going to use it as a backup if a hand controlled model will work. I'm askig this because I can get a good deal on an hand controlled motot but it just has a standard mount.

Thanks

Re: Trolling motor question

Take a look and see if the shaft diameters are the same milom. I don't see a problem with using a hand controlled motor with the gatormount if the shaft diameters are the same.

If I'm reading your post right, you want to put a hand controlled motor in a bow mount type holder. If this is so, should be no problem to swap them over.

Re: Trolling motor question

Thanks OBJ

You read it right. The thing that has me wondering as to whether the hand controlled motor would work is how would it turn in the mount I have. The motor I have now is larger at the top half of the shaft where it mounts while the bottom half is smaller. The hand controlled models I've looked at have a shaft that is all the same size and more the size of the bottom part of my current one.

Thanks again

Thanks again

Re: Trolling motor question

You need a sleeve of tubing to make up the difference in the 2 diameters. Can you measure the diameters accuately ? Then go to a Plumbing supply house for a tubing coupling- cut in half- scrape the paint off- RTV or epoxy to shaft- tape or string to hold it in place till dry. Done
