Trouble w/ water in oil

I need help. I have a 1995 3.0 OMC I/O. The head gasket blew this spring on the first trip out after dewinterizing. The boat has been in the shop every since.

1st they resurfaced the head, the shop took it for a test run and told me it wasn't right. Upon further inspection the head has a visible crack.

2nd I purchased a brand new head and all new gaskets. The shop took it for a test run and said the boat was ready to go.

I put the boat on the water and about 15 min. after running the engine shut off. I looked into the engine compartment and a milky oil and water mixture was everywhere. Could not tell where it was coming from. The engine started without any problem and ran fine back to the dock.

I returned the boat to the shop. They told me they wanted to magnaflux the head, if it wasn't cracked then I needed a new block.

I no longer have much faith in this shop and I wanted to get a second opinion. I have taken the boat to a guy who builds race engines. He magnafluxed the head and cylinder walls everything looks good. The cylinder head is flat as well as the block. When we seperated the head from the intake manifold the was standing water in one of the exhaust ports. The manifold will be pressure tested today.

When we checked the oil it looked like it was about 3 qaurts over full (milky white).

Any suggestions, or ideas would be very much appreciated. This is a learning process for me and the guy working on it. He is doing this as a favor. He is a high performance car guy.

Thanks

Sounds to me like a cracked manifold. Did you actually see the blown head gasket and cracked head? What were the symptoms of poor running when you first took the boat in for repair?

thats a lot of water in 15 min i would be pressure testing the block

pretty hard to come in from the manifold while its runing

tommays

Re: Trouble w/ water in oil

I never did see the blown head gasket. I just took their word for it at that stage. I still think it probably was blown. I'm not sure how to discribe the engine noises, but it sounded like some sort of exhaust leak. I also heard some rattling.

BTW, I should add that the engine did get hot last year. The belt to the water pump broke and I had to be towed in.

I have been doing some research today and I have found a couple of threads that may relate to my problems. I came across exhaust flappers being stuck from heat, and I seen something about an engine running backwards. Should I look into these possibilities? If so, what do I look for?

tommays

It does seem like alot of water for a crack in the manifold. The reason we are testing the manifold is because #1 it is the easiest place to start. #2 If the manifold wasn't cracked, would I have water in my exhaust port of my head?

Thanks

Also, it seems if you bought a new head it should be "good". Maybe the oil never got changed and it was left over from the first problem. I cant see the new head going in 15 minutes of running. Either the water is coming from an old issue in the block or it was never cleaned out in the first place. No way 3 quarts of water could enter through the exhaust. Even if all the water in the manifold managed to leak into the oil, it doesnt hold 3 quarts and there is no way for the water from the manifold to get while it is running.

Re: Trouble w/ water in oil

Let me backtrack, I said 3 quarts but thats a guess. The oil level is about 3-4 inches above full on the dipstick. Plus what was all over my engine compartment I'm "guessing" there is a few quarts of water mixed in. Could be more, could be less. I was thinking a "few" posted "3", my fault.

The new head and head gasket are good. The shop at the marina told me they thought it was bad. This is the 3rd look at the head and it looks fine.

I will look at the riser as well. What are some of the problems related to risers?

Thanks

WHO did the winterize on this boat ?

its hard to test a riser because you cant really seal the exaust end off

you can block off the exaust manifold when its off the motor and pressure test it and look for drips in the ports

BUT i used to live in johnson city and 10 years is not real old for a manifold in that nice fresh water but freezeing ages them real quick

tommays

Re: Trouble w/ water in oil

my thoughts are with the block, if you have a mix of oil and water in the bilge, start the engine and look it over very carfully while running and see if you can see where the oil/water mix is coming from. if it's spilling out the top of the dip stick tube, then you have to do some more trouble shooting, if its coming out of a 6 inch crack and a blown core plug, then it's time for a new engine...under normal conditions, I wouldn't tell you to do this, but it sounds like you have run it with the water in it already, so the damage is done. At the least, it will need new bearings and torn down and cleaned...good luck :(

Re: Trouble w/ water in oil

A local boating center winterized my boat last year. They charged me $100 and handed me 3 drain plugs. They did go out of buisness a month or so after that so I'm on my own even if it wasn't done correctly.

I should have also added in my original post that one of the freeze plugs in the exhaust manifold is crooked.

I just purchased this boat in the spring of 04 (from the same boating center that went out of buisness) so I do not know its history.

The funny thing is I bought an inexpensive boat to see if we would use it much or not. Its costing me a fortune and its always broke down.

I have already been looking for a replacement engine. I just want to be 100% sure I need one
before I order it.
