In the posted article it appears to me that at least one military officer has the backbone to stand up and state what he believes.. Looks like he has some powerful allies... Of course some on here will say it is just Bush bashing..seems the same ones here are blind to any wrong the admin might condone..

Here is the site.. http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/9865301/site/newsweek/

"sit on an exhaust pipe" I like that one!

Is this or is this not a war? Am I correct, the geneva convention only applies to soldiers in uniform in an established army? Of course we need go be more humane than our enemies, but some tactics are justified.

Yes, any reporting of the truth is "Bush-bashing" by definition.

Why are we hearing about this? Do what needs to be done...the public really don't need to know everything that goes into making war.

How much Bush would a Bush basher bash if a Bush basher had to take the Bush buck and do it better?

Re: Truth About Torture!!

I still did not see the Bush bash. just a point for GeeHaw AKA 'backpeddles" failure to adequatly outline how suspects are treated.
seems when the gooks did some torture we postulated and hollered, same when the somolies did it and the Iraqi military did it in the 90's. OH MY GOD tourture is so wrong we said, seems it only torture to some if it only happens to a US citzen. by bubbas standards a cop could pull granny over and beat her till she confessed that grandson jonny was snorting coke and not at the air national guard base like he was supposed to be.
I can see the book now, Bush and saddam, brothers in thuggery and torture.
they are detainees, not convicts. and even if they were convicts rules against torture are still there. one of baby's big reasons to go to war< other than the false WMD thang, was saddam was torturing his own people. so no that he is not its ok for the US to do it for him. thats how to win. on this point I will give senator Mcain 100% support. Torture is wrong. if its wrong on one side its wrong on the other. that plus the fact its rather well known that torture really does not produce credible intell.
its good to see we have such soldiers with enough backbone to say NO its not moraly right and I wont do it. war is one thing, torture quite another.
was a good article but I still did not see the bush bash.

Rodbolt, I agree with you totally. Torture is not right on either side.

As evidenced by the posts above it is apparent that some people can't see because of their Bushy eyebrows.
It wasn't about Bush. It was about higher ups condoning and even encouraging the torture. I said when this first broke that no enlisted would take that kind of action on their own initiative. I still believe that. The encouragement came from higher ups in the military chain, but you will not see anyone except the lower enlisted paying the price.

When a nuke is about to go off in your backyard, let's see who approves or disapproves of torture then.

I was thinking, whats the good of doing all the protesting here in the U.S.? Since all this terible stuff is hapening in Iraq, perhaps the do-gooders purpose would be best served by traveling to Iraq and protesting to the armed forces over there? How about it fellas? pack your stuff and get on over there and do some good! Put your money where your mouth is.
Rodbolt, for all the talk of racial equality you leftwingers do it sure sounds odd, or HYPOCRITICAL, to hear you use the term gooks. How can you convince me you truly believe your partys rubish about racism when you perpetuate the very thing your party is suposedly against?

As an outsider allow me to say it as I see it.
The american people reckon that they and their country stand up for what is right, I am sure that everyone will agree with me.

Your enemy uses tactics such as torture and terrorism. If you use similar tactics you are saying that torture is right.

The american people should be saying to the people of Iraq "This is our way, we do not believe in torture", then surely the people of Iraq, who have been subjected to torture and worse will be more likely to turn over the terrorists and make peace.
My apoligies if this offends any of you.

Re: Truth About Torture!!

I have to be honest I am conflicted, but . . .

I do believe like Kagee that there are times when the rules have to go out the window. If we suspect a time crunch on an eminent biggee (a la 9/11 etc) I say we need some latitude. This conflict is why these things get hung up. I honestly believe that guys like Bush understand that with absolute rules you force guys to break US laws to do what they have to sometimes. It is not pretty, it isn't nice, it's probably not right, but it may be a necessity and I don't want the good guys to be hampered when the bad guys can and will do whatever they want.

Sometimes freedom is expensive. It may even require that you compromise on your values and morality to protect it. I don't want to be in that position, but I want the guys we pay to understand these things to be able to act.

Re: Truth About Torture!!

if your morals are for sale they are not worth much to begin with. torture is wrong. a good example, there are thousands, is the FACT that sen john mcain is a war crimminal. he signed the documents so it must be.
how did he come to sign those papers?
no amount of torture would affect a 9/11 event. good intel like the admin and others had might have but appearently it was not aggressivly acted on.
but ya cant go on air and say torture in the US is BAD but torture at an undisclosed facility under US control is GOOD. that gives a conflicted message of what we stand for.
the SS the KGB and the ROK all used torture rather frequently and we condemed it for years. that coupled with the fact it rarely produced credible results. thousands of "detainees" in the russian,Chineses and german SS custody were tortured. some on the most flimsy of suspicions and some just cause they were at the wrong place at the wrong time.
for tousands that were tortured at the hands of the north veitnamese, ill refrain from the sarcastic gook term, there is no evidence that they ever got any credible info. all their good intel came from spies in the US.
so far there is no credible evidence that Iraq had or was ramping up a WMD program. the yellow cake thing was laughable and a knee jerker.
anyone care to guess where saddam obtained the seed stock for his late 80's anthrax program and who autherized the sale? anyone care to guess where saddam got the gas he used to supress the kurdish uprising?
what we need is better espionage, its hard to kep and recruit them if you out them. legal technicalities notwithstanding.
I am in no way defending saddam, he was a mean evil rat bisterd that needed to go. however you need to find out how he got that way. if you dont history WILL repeat itself.
