i am trying to change the impeller and gaskets on water pump on 1984 25hp merc XD. I am using a SELCO manual.

it says to:
1. tilt the motor until it locks in the upright position (Done)
2. shift the motor into the forward gear (done)

3. "Remove the shift lever coupler located in the bottom cowling behind the carbuertor" (not done, I think i know what the coupler is, but i can not get it off while in forward... just to make sure, is the coupler the piece that is around a ball ? if so, how do i get it off? (there are no pictures of this)

4. remove 4 bolts holding lower unit on, (Done)

5. "ease the lower unit from the intermediate housing (not done, i can not get it to pull off and i do not want to damage anything...it seperates about 1/5 of an inch, but will not pull off anymore...)

Please help, stuck on these to points: the shift lever coupler, and pulling the lower unit off.

thanks

There is a pin (clip) on the port side under the carb for the shift linkage. See why we don't like aftermarket manuals

thanks,
Laddies, all my shift linkage is on the starboard side (right). I guess it depends on if you are facing the outboard from front or back. I sill do not see how to get it off...?

also, is this what is keeping me from being able to remove lower unit? or am i just not pulling hard enough? (dont want to break anything)?

jimg984,
i think the part you are talking about is on motors newer than mine. the motor talks about it but it is talking about newer ones

Re: trying to change impeller... stuck..PLEASE HELP

ok, got it all apart, changed impeller and gaskets!

but 2 problems, I need a new water pump seal (mine is dry rotted) and I can not find the part number...? it is the rubber seal that connects the waterpump to the tube that carries water up and out to the tell tail... I searched on crowley marine, is this the part number 85090001 ?

also, i put it back together just together with the old water pump seal just to make sure i did everything right, i started it up and everything works, but i realized that i forgot to put in the centrifugal slinger (like an o-ring that sits on top of the water pump cover on the drive shaft!

it still works fine and pumps water great, but did I do any damage by starting it without the slinger?

so in short, my two questions are:

1. please help me find a part number for the seal that connects water pump to upward water tube
2. what does the centrifugal slinger do? and did i hurt anything by starting it without it?

thanks
