I have a 1990 OMC 4.3HO motor, and last year she ran perfectly.
The past few times I've had her in the water, she was running a little rough, mostly at low speeds, like something was missing/misfiring. Then ... the last time I was in the water she would not shift into idle speed. It was very difficult to shift to neutral, without slipping into reverse.
So, I have my mechanic come to my house and check out what's what. She seems to shift fine, cable is moving freely, no trouble there. So we decide to focus on the idle speed issue, and running rough.
It was suggested that I had too much fuel in my 4bbl holley carb, so I replaced the needles and seats, floats were fine and level, and replaced all the gaskets in the kit through the bowls. Put the carb back together. Also replaced the spark plugs, thinking there may be an issue with fire, resulting in the rough running.
So, back to my mechanic, she starts fine, however, now the idle is extremely high and won't adjust by manual or throttle adjustment.
The latest diagnosis is a bad ignition module (No Longer Available/Obsolete Part), but I'm just not convinced of that.
After reading through some posts and my Seloc manual (not the greatest for this motor) it seems that it may be the timing sensor, or shift cable.
But I don't understand why the shift cable would have anything to do with the idle being hig.
