Im only 30 so it wasnt that long ago, but i suspect the boat was pretty old when i saw it at about 15. It was a friend of the families, and have never seen another like it since.

It was a small 1 or two seater boat with an outboard. It looked something like these but on a smaller scale.

Where the cockpit is on these, is where a 4 wheeler style handlebar was, and the long center part was a bench seat. you sat straddle of it, and if you rode a second person, they sat behind you. It had a true outboard on it, but it wasnt very big. The center was very similar to todays wave runners, but it had like a tunnel hull setup and an outboard engine.

The post about the hydrocycle is what sparked the memory, but it wasnt as sleek as that one, and sat up out of the water more. It was decent sized, and a lot bigger then a wave runner or jet ski..

Any ideas?

Ok well dang, now I want one. I have a few 15-40HP outboards clogging the shed that would look great on one of these things.

this "funboat" seems to be as close as i could find so far. But i remember it having a more defined tunnel hull.

There are so many one-offs and low production runs locally, the best thing for the OP to do is look at what I've been looking at via these search terms:

Google, then choose 'images' to return only pics in the search results:

enter these terms (whole line), then look over hundreds of pics;

tunnel hull pwc
tunnel hull waverunner
hydroplane pwc
hydroplance waverunner
early PWc
early waverunner
waverunner predecessor

^^^^^ yup ^^^^^

I think there were even a bunch of plans for them in magazines like "Popular Mechanics" and the like. You might have a home built in your mind's eye beason.

it may have been! it was on a nice trailer and everything. He did a lot of "trading" so it may have been some exotic something or a one off hull.

Re: trying to find a boat from my childhood.

Used to be all kinds of fun things running on our lake. The small home built hydroplanes were pretty popular in the 80's. That type of thing would have come along right with the early jet skis.

TONS of hull plans and old "Popular Mechanics" issues online. Hope you find the one you're looking for.
