Re: Trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

LOL...kitchen... Actually everything dried in the kitchen. 30 degrees outside so I'd run a piece outside spray it then run back in and let it dry. I had pieces on the 5able stove and counter. I did spray a couple of coats of clear inside. I think I got to many fumes sat just letting them dry inside. Silly impatience.

Re: Trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

Whats up guys... Hope everyone's weekend was good. Mine didn't go as planned ,but I'm not far behind. Finally got all the painting done about 8pm Sunday night. Started the rebuild 2 hours later. Everything's going pretty well so far. Didn't get vary far do to the upper water tube grommet. I think it's finally in there good now. Few sore spots on my hand for the trouble:D. After getting the grommet in I tried pushing the water tube in ,And I'm not sure it's setting all the way down. Should the tube be fairly secure once it's properly in the grommet? I pushed and twisted for a bit , And the tube never felt like it went in far enough. It never got real tight always kinda easily floating around inside the housing , and vary easily pulled out. Does the lower Unit hold the tube in place or should it be pretty secure without the LU in place? Thanks for any help. Here's some pics of the progress.

Re: Trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

Wow. so I just glanced to the left and read my join date as Jan 2012. Figured no way is that right. It feels more like 3 months or so. I can's believe in 48 days. Ive gone from never working on a boat motor, and having only my original 25hp rude and 14ft boat. To now having A 66 40hp Johnson, Another 60's 40hp Johnson, A 18hp 59 Johnson plus my original. And a Invader tri hull boat Plus my original. Not only acquiring all these things ,but completely tearing down, and now rebuilding one motor, and stopping in the middle to do a complete new Ignition on my 25 rude. For me living in the land of expensive boat stuff, and usually having little extra money, plus having no knowledge of working on boat motor's if anyone would had told me 48 days ago all this was possible I would have told them they where crazy. Pretty COOL:D. In a few more days when hopefully this 18hp runs It'll be even cooler. Without all of you Guy's help I for sure wouldn't have gotten here. So thanks alot to all of you for furthering along my knowledge in life. ;)

First of all, good job! :O
I have a 20 hp from 1970 and most of the parts look identical to my eye. Did you replace the powerhead gaskets? I'm looking for a set but most of the places have them for Johnsons starting from the year 1978 or so.

Thanks wolf...I had 130 and 127 psi compression. So the powerhead was the only thing I didn't take apart.

Yes, to answer your question the water tube will wedge in nicely once the LU is on place, not to worry.

Re: Trying to rebuild 18 hp Johnson

Still have to redo the ignition,And the fuel pump. Have A question on the fuel pump. If I go with the Mikuni pump I got that figured out. It 's using a regular Johnson fuel pump I can't figure out. From what I understand I can order a fuel pump off an early 60's model 18 Hp Johnson. I know the plate unto witch it's gets attached, But other than that I don't get it. Something about tapping a hole. I'm just don't understand this method. I like the clean look of a Johnson fuel pump. But price is a factor at this point. Anyone that can help with explaining this method would be appreciated. One main question on using a johnson fuel pump. Is do you still have to do anything under the Leaf plate. Thanks.

One more question does anyone know if I can get the connecter that actually uses these holes. Everything I've found looks like it has no way of connecting to anything. Just the fuel connecter part

Geezus. Great paint job!

Thanks Samo... I put Alot of hrs into the paint. Probably won't do it again without first getting a sand blaster. The knucks and crannies just suck. I'm not sure it will hold Up quite like I would like it to. Probably should get a compressor and paint gun for the next one to. I don't know if any of the pictures really do the color justice. when I get it out in the sun I'll post some pics of It then. I really like the color

You can get a bypass cover off an later model engine also that has the holes already tapped in it. Or if you PM me your address I can send you some pics on how to tap yours.

There is a guy on ebay that sells a piece of plate aluminum with all the holes drilled and tapped in the right places, It is like $10 shipped. I couldn't make it that cheap.
