Hey, has anyone done or seen it done, turbo charging a Mercruiser 5.7 L engine in an express cruiser?

Are/Would there be any benefits? Would it be hard to do?

Just thought I'd throw it out there to see if it is even feasible.

Old news....pretty much been abandoned.
Banks and other used to sell kits, really not a good way to go on a boat, superchargers (Procharger for one) are 100X easier to install.
Google them up.

This topic is more out of curiosity than anything else. I am of the type to keep it stock and reliable then mess around and have problems.

What are the difficulties with Turbo Chargers?

Are the Superchargers reliable?

Heat, effective RPM range, and the dreaded turbo-lag all come to mind.

Turbo lag would not really be a problem on a boat I would think.....

With a "wet" exhaust it would absolutely be a challenge though. I know a guy in Ca that put a 400 small block and belt driven blower in his Bayliner .... It's probably easily 450 hp! . It's in front of an Alpha though .....(I hope he doesn't "straight-arm" it!!)

It's FAR easier to do a belt driven supercharger than it is to to do an exhaust driven supercharger because of the unique exhaust requirements of a enclosed marine engine. It wouldn't be a problem in a boat with an exposed engine.

It's the exhaust piping for a turbo that make it both a hassle and a fire hazard . . . To do it properly you would need wet piping from both manifolds, to some space where you'd mount the turbo and then back to the Y pipe from the turbo exhaust outlet, or pipe that through transom. Plus you need a water cooled turbine housing. All a problem if not factory. I agree that turbo lag is not that bigga deal, especially with a cruiser.

Ayuh,......

If you look Long,+ Hard you can find systems just as described by QC,....
Water cooled manifolds, water cooled turbos,+ wet risers to dump everything out the back......
I've seen them for both SBCs,+ BBCs.....

I've been rat holing all the pieces to do a dry exhaust turbo'ed Jetdrive for years now,.....
'course,... About All I'm lacking is the Time to put it all together.......;)
