turns fine without plugs

My motor will turn over strong and quick without the plugs in but with them in it does short bursts, what does this mean? I already know that 1 of the plug wires is bad, is the starter just too weak to handle the compression of having the plugs in? I took the starter apart and the brushes are real worn would that make a difference if I changed them?

What kind of motor are you working on? It's very likely, your starter needs rebuilding.

the brushes are definitely worn in the starter does that have a lot to do with the turning power??

Worn brushes should not decrease starter performance. You may have a low or weak battery, dirty connections, or ignition timing too far advanced.

I don't have a deep cycle marine battery yet so I am using my truck to jump it with the truck engine running, could that not be strong enough? I have cleaned the connection points with a wire brush, should I start reading about ignition timing? that could be why the motor turns over fine without spark plugs in?

How its turn with the pull starter? Most likely it's just building compression with the plugs in.

The motor didn't come with the pull starter housing on top of the flywheel so all I have is an electric starter, I was thinking about seeing if it is possible to get a free lawn mower and take the pull starter and use that I don't know if anyone has ever done that before, it would be nice to have a backup along with jumper cables if the battery dies...:)

I bet the flywheel has a notch for a rope to manually start that outboard..

heck I have one on my 50 hp!!!!

just get a rop as thick as will go in the notch, tie an over hand knot, easy and small.

make the rope long enough to rap maybe 1.5 times.

and get a wooden handle to feed the rope through as in a T fashion and let her rip

make sure she is choked

If you use a pull rope make sure that no one is behind you, don't ask me how I know this.

Buy the proper marine battery and install it with the proper marine cables.
Don't start fiddling around with the ignition timing.

Do you know how to run an outboard using a hose with muffs?
If not then wait until you know what you're doing or you'll blow the water pump.

Re: turns fine without plugs

Had a similar problem with an older Johnson a year ago. $12.61 for a new set of brushes had it cranking like a new one. Badly worn brushes don't sit as tight against the communtator and tend to arc more or all four may not be seating. This can also cause overheating of the brush holders further weakening the springs.
Since you have already taken it apart once to inspect the brushes the job should go much faster this time. Also if it arcs to much the bakelite brush holder assembly can be damaged. Much more money than just the brushes.

You dont need a Deep Cycle Batt. for cranking. you need a Cranking Batt for cranking.
Are you jumper cables any good? Most of the ones I have seen wont turn over a Lawnmower.

I have muffs that I hookup with the hose whenever I try and start it.
My jumper cables are pretty heavy duty I don't remember what gauge.
We made a flywheel puller and are attempting that right now to see whats up with the one spark wire that isn't sparking. I think I will have to order some brushes for my starter.

Order a torque wrench for installing the flywheel too.

Swap the coils around to see if its the coil.

Order the repair manual.
