I have dropped the lower ends on these 2 motors, The oil when drained looked new, no water or metal.
I replaced the water pump impellers, and put the water pump housing back together. I have noticed that they both turn freely when turning the drive shafts but one turns much easier. They both shift and change gears and directions.
When looking at them from the top the correct rotatin of the shaft is clockwise correct?
One unit had an aluminum gasket between the lower end and the upper mounting surface, the other had no gasket...???
Where can i purchase the gasket and new "O" rings and water tube rubber connectors?

Should I pop open the bottom skag cover or fill with oil and re assemble??

I have carburator and fuel pump kits and will rebuild these next week...
Thanks for any help

Thanks

Cool beans! Another set of twin 35's. To answer your questions:
Clockwise is correct...unless the PO set one up counter-rotating (cclockwise)
Never heard of the gasket...never seen one on those motors...does it look homemade?
If the gasket is stock, try Engine, Blade and Prop in Milwaukee, WI (on the web, too) for it and the O-rings and water tube rubbers.
If only oil came out of the LU's when you checked them, just refill with fresh marine hypoid and they're ready to rip...no need for surgery unless there was water in there.

The Gasket looks factory, but only one had a gasket,

For the O rings, and water tube rubber seats is their a Lower unit Kit?

Thanks,

Hey those motors look awesome. I love that set up you have there. It looks like the motors cleaned up nicely.:D

No kit that I know of for O rings and grommets...they are separate parts, but not too pricey. Any Bombardier/Evinrude dealer should have the O rings, if you mean the washers that go under the fill/drain plugs in the lower unit.

No need for the gasket. Only thing it would hold in would be exhaust & water, both of which you want out...

If the oil was clean, I'd leave the skegs alone for now. Run the motors a few times and recheck the oil. If it is milky, then address the seals.

Love the look of that boat! What is it?

See my first post if possible on Homebuilt runabout, 1956
I also started a restoration blog, see it at
http://1956runaboutrebuild.blogspot.com/

I ordered the o rings and gromets for the water pickups, I will soon rebuild the carbs and fuel pumps then try to start.
