Two Questions: VRO Pump and Tilt/Trim

I just replaced my VRO pump. Evinrude 200 HP, 1996. It cost a fortune.

Now the worries. Can a new VRO pump be damaged by pumping the oil bulb when the oil line is connected to the VRO Pump? I was told by the shop to be sure to pump the bulb really hard to remove all air from the line, but I'm thinking now that I should've had the line disconnected. No big deal or a possible problem?

Secondly, my electric tilt works great going up, but when I go back down it is inconsistent. Sometimes the switch seems to be defective, or, perhaps, the mounting is binding up. Always perfect going up, but "hit and miss" going back down. I have to fiddle with the switch, or so it seems. Any ideas on what I should check or look for? It doesn't seem like it could be a relay, unless a bad relay would react intermittently like that. A ground wire? Or, maybe it is just binding a bit; it's heavy enough.

Thanks in advance.

On the tilt/trim problem, does it act the same when using the switch at the control box and the switch on the engine?

Re: Two Questions: VRO Pump and Tilt/Trim

A new VRO pump should be tested on installation for priming, flow, and the NO OIL alarm system as explained in the later service manuals.

Remove the oil hose and hold the oil primer ball vertical to get all the air out until it is flowing steady out of the end of the hose and reinstall with the correct clamp. Squeeze the ball for a few seconds to get oil up thru the oiling system.

Refer to the service manual to test the NO OIL system and the oil flow test.

Swap the relays and see if trim up now is the problem if both switches do the same thing.

Yes, when it won't move down, it makes no difference which switch I try. Just fyi, now it's working again after I raised it up higher, then back down. To me, it seems like something is binding on the down travel--when a push the switch I can hear it trying to go, then it suddenly does go. Maybe a bad wire somewhere? I'm hoping not the motor.

Sorry, guys, I know this should have been a separate post from my VRO question. Better next time.

Well, I can't get the alarm to go off. I've got 50:1 in the tank but I'm afraid to let it keep running. I ran it 7 minutes and no alarm with the hose disconnected.

Re: Two Questions: VRO Pump and Tilt/Trim

does your horn beep for the self-test and the 4 lights go on and off when you turn the key on?

Did you bend or miss any pins when you plugged in the warning alarm "VRO" harness?

Did you disconnect the oil line at the VRO and let the pump drain for a few minutes before starting the motor for the NO OIL test. At an idle speed it will take a long time to run out of oil. Run the motor about 1500 rpm in gear in the water to test. It does take a while and this is why it should be tested when a new pump is installed.
