Re: U - G - L - Y Ford Super Duty!
I still think the new F250 has a butt-ugly front end. My '01 looks WAY better.
I finally went down to the Ford dealership yesterday and took test drives in the F250 XLT as well as the F150 XLT with the HD package. The F250's GVCW is 8800#, and the HD F150 is 8200- only 600# difference. Both trucks were standard cab w/ 8' beds and 5.4 gas engines. BTW- I'm dealing directly with the general manager of the dealership, not the sales manager or (even worse) some rookie. This guy knows what he's talking about.
First of all, the 150 was OK and rode very much like a car- even with the 4 wheel drive. I liked the access behind the seat- the rear of the cabsides open up like a supercab, only smaller. BUT... I couldn't escape the thought that it would be easy to overload. The dealer kept telling me it would be fine for my use. Keep in mind that I want a work truck, and I'll be installing a steel contractors cap weighing 500# (empty) on it. The other "revelation" from him was that the heavy duty F150 uses 7 lug wheels and Ford only offers steel rims for it (YUK). Apparently they've been doing it like this for at least 3 years, but there are still no aftermarket wheels made to fit. That's unbelievable to me. I'm just worried that the constant weight would make the suspension sag over time. I usually keep my trucks for 150,000-200,000 miles.
The F250 rode well, with a noticibly stiffer suspension. Not uncomfortable to me, but certainly not car-like. I liked the dash and interior layout way better than the 150, and the seats seemed similar (both had cloth 40/20/40). The space behind the seat was useable but the seatback had to be moved to access it.
As far a carrying capability, I have no worries that the F250 will do the job for me. Overall, I like the 250 better. But.... I don't know if I'll EVER like that nose!. The dealer tells me the 2009 F150's are going to have a look similar the the current Super Dutys, so I guess we're all going to be stuck with that look for the forseeable future.
Damn. I think I'm talking myself into an ugly truck. I've never been so un-excited about a new vehicle.
