Ugghh... buckled trailer tongue

Well, it's been a little while since I've posted here... been extremely busy with work and vacations... Anyhow, Tuesday before last (two days before we was leaving for vacation) my wife and I along with some friends took the boat out to cruise the river for the day/evening. Everything went great, had a great time and the boat ran flawless.. It was around 10:30pm when I finally decided to call it quits.

So, I pull the boat up to the courtesy dock, tie off, and run up to get the truck (the wife wasn't comfortable backing in as the lights along the ramp were not lit for whatever reason). So anyhow, get the trailer down in fine, and myself and my friend grab the bow rope to float the boat onto the trailer as my wife and her friend waited by the truck. Well, we started having a TON of trouble trying to get the boat lined up just right as the water levels were a bit lower than usual (have been low all year, but were even lower this evening) so I released the tilt-lock pin, thinking if I tilt the trailer and just line up the skeg with the rear roller, I can just winch her up and be done. We managed to get the boat straight, and cranked up enough to where the trailer tilted back down like it should........or so I thought....

As I'm cranking the winch to finish pulling the boat up to the bow roller, I notice it was harder than usual to crank up, so I ask my wife to grab the spotlight so I can look over the whole thing to see if something was caught... Well, it only took me a few seconds to realize what happened, or rather what I had done..... When the trailer tilted back down, it didn't line up squarely with the tongue, one of the corners of the tilt-lock bracket had rested down onto the tongue, and when I continued cranking, instead of pulling the boat forward, it actually pushed that bracket down into the tongue, and unbelievably was enough to cause me to buckle the tongue down right where the latch is  ....

Considering it was so late, I decided to just leave the boat/trailer in the parking lot for the night. The next day, I (probably a stupid idea, but it worked) had a buddy meet me at the parking lot. I used a jack to bend the tongue back as best I could, then used two 6' long 4x4 posts, one on top and one on bottom, and put multiple straps around it to give a little extra support to the tongue where it bent. I then had my buddy follow me as I towed the boat home at about 5-10mph the whole way... Thank God it is only about 3 miles, but with a ridiculously steep, 3/4 mile hill to go up. It all worked out and I got the boat home, and bear in mind, if we weren't leaving for vacation, I would have unloaded the boat and left it tied off to my brothers dock for a couple days while I brought just the trailer home to fix.

So,tomorrow, I'm off to buy a new 8' piece of 3x3x1/4" square tubing to replace the entire tongue section. uggghhh.... it's always something around here...

I had considered that, but in my opinion (and I very well could be wrong) but the big advantage to a folding tongue is storage, which isn't an issue for me, especially not for the cost difference between straight square and folding....

I havent taken any yet but I will this evening. Just got back from the local scrap yard, picked up an 8 1/2' long piece of 3"x3"x1/4" square for $25 and it just has a tiny bit of surface rust on t hehe. Hoping to have it painted and installed tonight.

Problem is now that you've bent and re-bent the metal it will be weak at that point.

I too would be interested in seeing pictures of this as I also use a tilt trailer.

1/4" wall is pretty heavy duty isn't it?

That's why I went out and bought a whole new section. I'm replacing the entire tongue from coupler to trailer frame.

I originally wanted to go with 3/16" wall, but the place I bought it at didn't have any.. I should also add that (and this is not a joke lol) that a few of my close friends that I have done work for, and who have helped me work on/build things call me "Captain Overkill" lol. I get it from my dad. Way I see it, 1/4" may be overkill for this boat, but I'd rather have too much strength than not enough. I realize it's going to add quite a bit of more weight, however the combined weight, as well as tongue weight prior to stepping up to this thickness, was WAY under the tow/tongue weight ratings of my tow vehicle and hitch set up.

Managed to get a few pics.

Bent tongue 1.jpg

Bent tongue 2.jpg

It's kind of hard to see, but in this pic I tried to show what I was talking about when I said about the bracket resting on the tongue and causing the bend.. The bracket is supposed to go down over the tongue...
Bent tongue 3.jpg

Again I'm gonna bring up the fact of how lucky I am to have married a redneck woman... After I got done mowing our field a little bit ago, I pulled the tractor in the driveway, and found that my wife had completely sanded down the new square tubing I picked up this morning, and has it all prepped for primer/paint!

At least it is not worse, that is real fixable with the square tube, it will be better than factory when you get through.

That's how I'm looking at it... If i was able to buckle it that easy with the winch, it was a blessing in disguise considering it happened at the ramp and not on the highway going 65mph.

Wow!!! That looks messy.
Does the bed and the tongue shift that much that they actually hit out of alignment?

Re: Ugghh... buckled trailer tongue

Honestly man, I don't know what or how it didn't line up when it dropped.. only thing i can think is that the ground wasn't level where the trailer tires were, and when I undid the tilt lock, one tire moved more than the other.. it was only off by about 1/8" but considering its an exact fit, even 1/16" or 1/32" off would be enough for it to not line up..

I just got the new tongue bolted up to the trailer still gotta mount the jack, winch post and spare tire. Been taking pictures along the way that ill post later on.

Re: Ugghh... buckled trailer tongue

Alright, well since I apparently just got my THIRD wind.. I decided to post the pics tonight lol... didn't take a whole bunch, but enough to get the idea of yet another "should only take me an hour or two" projects that double in time and work expected lol

Last coat of paint on the new tongue.... and with the old tongue off and resting on horses, you can really tell just how much it actually buckled... (nevermind the junk pile in the background.... haven't quite made it to the scrap yard in a while lol)
IMAG0031.jpg

Quick, what's wrong with this picture?!?!? lol
IMAG0032.jpg

Sorry but the next few pics came out really blurry for some reason..

Got the new tongue bolted up to the trailer, safety chains bolted on, and wiring fished through the tongue
IMAG0033.jpg

Winch post mounted, and my home-made spare tire bracket and 4-way bracket back on.
IMAG0034.jpg

Trailer jack bolted on and boat winched up...
IMAG0036.jpg

On a side note, the old tongue was 7' 10", the new tongue is 8' 6".. I was a little 'worried' about such a large difference in length, but actually I found out something tonight... with the old tongue, with the winch mount as far forward as I could get it and still clear the truck, I wasn't able to get the boat completely onto the trailer, it was secure and trailered fine, but the problem was that the bunks didn't reach clear to the transom, instead there was about 6" of boat sticking out past the bunks... With the new tongue, I was able to move the winch mount up farther, thus getting the boat to rest completely on the bunks, now they are even with the transom. It doesn't 'feel' like I actually added THAT much extra tongue weight when I pick it up by hand. Planning on takin her for a test tow in the morning to make sure everything is 100%. Hopefully all that's left now for this trailer, is to come up with a design and build some roller guide-on's to help keep this pig straight when trying to load up.

Re: Ugghh... buckled trailer tongue

Again WOW! That was quite a bend. When you finish this project cut that old tongue off just in front or behind the bend and let's see how much corrosion is inside the tube. Had to be weakened somehow to bend that much. Also please look at the bolt holes where the tongue attaches to the bed and try to see if the holes were elongated or much larger than the bolt. That's the only place the tongue could swing far enough to go out of alignment.

Anyhow, nice quick job. Looks great and the added length will help in many more ways than just beeing able to move the winch post forward.

Why is your bow eye ABOVE your bow roller ?
