I have a 1986 23' Proline C.C. And I have some serious questions. I have searched the forum and threads and have not found the answers I am looking for. Several issues... First after oiling the final piece of teak I went to install it and the what shuld have been saw dust on my bit was actually a wet paste. Meaning I have moisture in my transom. I took the bit and dug around and it didnt seem to be rotted. However it is a 1986 and I know wood was used. What can I do for additional checks without damaging the transom? Second; If I do find rot how do I take the top shell off? Is it glassed to the hull? Do I have to make any cuts? If so where? Im sorry I know very little about these things I am new to project boats but I love the old school fishing boats... I know there is mould in the bilge are and on the tank, but the floor seems very solid not spungy anywhere, does'nt flex anywhere.... Seems to be solid. I just spent the winter repainting, rewiring, and redoing the teak so before I tackle any other issues I would like to use the boat this season if I can.... Please advise.

It sounds like the transom is compromised. This means you need to replace it which will be a lot of work. I don't know your boat structure so you might be able to get away without removing the cap, although most restores will remove it for clear access. To remove the cap, one would usually remove the rub rail by drilling out the rivets/screws and then pop the top off. The other method is cutting along the hull/cap line. As I said, I don't know your boat. Having a solid floor means that if there are rotted stringers, your floor is still solid. It does not mean your stringers are solid. Best of luck with the project. Post some pics and the guys here can give you a better idea.

Hudson,

If in fact you do need a new transom (and it sounds like you do), you live in the Hub (Florida) of synthetic polyesther pourable transom coring materials. They are Seacast, NIDA pourable transom compound and Arjay compound. All have websites. They are fairly spendy, but are not difficult to do. I have used the NIDA, and it worked great. They have great tech support too. Check them out, and don't let the idea of removing the rotten wood core from the transom without removing or damaging the outer and inner hull skins scare you. Its not that hard to do.

All news I was not wanting to hear.... She has a prety big Johnson.... 225 Ocean Runner to be exact. I will get some pics asap on the thread but I sure was hoping it woud be strong enough to last through the season. and break her down (again) this coming winter... Im pretty sure once I take off the NEW moulding I just put on the top will lift... How to lift the huge thing I dont know... Once inside I'll be ok. I dont really have any access from the stern....

So Back to the topic... Looks like I will have to remove the top first by removing the moulding and screws... Then taking the console and leaning post out... Any advice on how to lift that sucker up? Do I have to make any cuts anywhere?

I'm in Florida... I have a home in Georgia as well so I just have everything registered there since we spend equal ammounts of time at each place. Too expencive to register vehicles in Florida... I, we, my wife has helped a bunch... have done a ton of work which is why I will be very disapointed if I cant catch the tail end of the cob run and our shortened black bass season this year... Im considering drilling some holes in the transom to root around to see just how solid she is, and see if I can make her last through fall. then take her apart this winter... I dont know how else to test the integrety of the transom...
