Re: Uniform rant

Uniforms don't make a child, Parents (people do).

Chomp on that tidbit for a while.

It's foreign to many but realized by more than you think.

See the first sentence. Your children will reflect where/what YOU are.

Think about it.

Re: Uniform rant

lockey, I see your point about the economics of uniforms for 5 kids, maybe the're tax deductable though? I know that's not much consolation now. I also realize this is another way of infringing on our individual rights, like the mandatory seat belt law, but after seeing what kids today are normally allowed to wear to school, compared to what I was allowed to wear, it sometimes is vulgar, obscene, weird, too casual, or messy. It has gotten out of hand I'm sure, and I don't doubt it has contributed to alot of discipline issues. If I were in charge, I'd be sending kids home left, & right, to get redressed in something more appropriate for school! I'm sure that would fly! That's why they'd never let me be ;) At least a uniform would put everyone on an even plane, or status, so that they can get on with the business of teaching our kids, and help the kids to learn discipline. Some religious schools have had this uniform policy in effect forever anyway. I'm not in favor of this idea either for the reasons I stated, but we live in a different age now, and if it helps, and I think it will. I say go with the flow.

Re: Uniform rant

I don't really agree with all the reasons schools have for enforcing a uniform policy. I have never been to a school that had one but if I had, you better believe that my parents would of made me wear it. The reason is, and have been mentioned, that is the rules. You have to follow the rules, you may not want to, but you do. You may not like the rules, they may not seem fair, thats life. It sucks, and I feel your pain. There are a lot of rules I don't like, but I follow them. You had a chance to influence the rules by a vote, but the secret society withheld that information from you and only invite people that would vote their way, really? I mean I love a good conspiracy theory as much as the next guy, but Big Uniform did not get together with the school board to conspire a way to screw the hard working people of your town out of their money.
I don't like school uniforms at public school. I don't like that people that think taking away individuality for the sake of a "level playing field" is a good idea. Sure some kids will have better clothes and some will be picked on about their clothes. It's part of growing up. I got picked on pretty good in the third grade because my shoes looked like adidas but they had four stripes. It's what my parents could afford at the time.
I understand if you don't like the uniform rule but it is the rule and now you have to set an example for your kids. Which will it be? One hand you could teach them certain rules don't apply to them and it's up to them to pick which one to follow, and on the other you could teach them that yes some rules suck but you have to follow them and find way within the system to change them. If it is like you say, and there are a lot of parents that don't like this policy, get together and go to school board meetings and voice your opion and get it brought back up to a vote. This time show up and vote.

Oh an if you decide to send them a letter, please use the space bar after a period. It will make it easier to read and they are more apt to listen to you.

Re: Uniform rant

I wore uniforms, my kids wear uniforms. They are much cheaper than buyer new clothes every month to keep up with the Jones. My wife runs the used uniform sell and gets first pick. you can get uniforms alot cheaper that way.

The fact everyone is on an even playing field is a good thing. The kids in all schools look good. I have seen some schools where the kids have those baggy pants and big shirts (uniforms). Maybe we should get a forum going about the underwear flashing going on now a days. That is the dumbest thing I have ever seen.

Re: Uniform rant

I think DJ is wrong with what he says. I think that if you are going to vote on something it should be fair and balanced. If it was would it have passed?? That is what you have to ask the board. If they will not answer and you are this upset about it hire a attorney. There has been schools near me that after this last year the uniform has been overturned because of bogus voting like you speak of. You are the parent of your children and that is the bottom line.

Re: Uniform rant

When I was a BS den leader I found it very hard to get the boys to wear their uniforms. For some reason they just didnt think it was cool . In junior high school the peer pressure social pecking order begins big time which is great for the ones with parents who can afford it but its not fair to the learning enviroment because they use it to degrade others who cant join their "club" which HAS NO PLACE IN SCHOOL.The ones who wore the name brand items which came from the name brand stores would try to set themselves aside from the ones who just had cloths from sears..Kids dont need to have to deal with this at school and uniforms solve it.

Re: Uniform rant

If you feel that strongly about it, you should sue the school, claiming that they are violating their first amendment rights to wear what they want to make a statement. There have been plenty of prior rulings on the matter, all in favor of students' freedoms, so it should be an open and close case.

I'm not so sure you shouldn't be sueing the school anyway, in reference to your 1x4 comment.

Re: Uniform rant

I believe that kids should have the freedom to express themselves and wear what they choose within reason. Obviously, derogatory comments on shirts, or clothes that may expose too much skin shouldn't be allowed, but I don't see what it really hurts. Everyone is different, and trying to make them wear the same clothing takes something away from their individuality, in my opinion. Of course, I didn't have to wear uniforms, so I'm probably not the best judge.
And thats my 2 cents worth, which I'm sure is worth a lot less.:D

Re: Uniform rant

Update: After the school punished our son twice for the same offence they transfered our kids to a non uniform school .This is something you can't do until December and takes a month to get approved they did in an hour .I think it had something to do with other parents calling in about a bogus vote .It didn't hurt that we had calls comeing in from iraq by our military .I would like to thank everyone for there oppinions .

Re: Uniform rant

I have one objection to school uniforms in particular - they usually are distinctive enough to make the particular school known to anyone looking at them. This can even be true when there are no logos, although there usually are logos.

I don't want every person who looks at my son's school clothing to know where he goes. Keeping our children safe is hard enough, without the pedophiles knowing exactly where to find them five days a week.

They park there in the afternoon.
Relax.

Re: Uniform rant

You're missing the point - I don't want to open opportunities for someone who might target my kid, to know where he spends a significant portion of his time. Pedophiles hanging around a school randomly looking for a target, is certainly a problem, but having one go there looking for a specific kid is a pretty scary thought.

Like most things, the uniform idea is a "mixed bag." It has its good points and bad points - what I mentioned just happens to be one of the bad points.

Re: Uniform rant

As a kid in school I hated the very idea of a school uniform. Now I look back at the pictures of us at that time and I think it might have been a good idea. We looked like ****!

I graduated, moved to another part of the country, and my new girlfriend was a year younger than me. She wore one & could never understand why I wanted her to wear it on Saturday. I thought she looked sooooo, uh, cute.

Anyway, this should have been a poll.

That last photo could be from any town in Australia.
A very general statement....the girls uniform in public schools looks like that....the girls in private schools normally have longer skirts.
In fact, I would just about put money on it....its an Aussie picture!!
That's what our kids look like.
Cheers

DJ's statement made sense to me. DJ can correct me if I I am wrong, but I believe DJ simply said, we are only talking about uniforms. In the whole scheme of things, so what? It's a uniform. If you want your kids to adjust well and continue to do so, you the parent should set the example. If you are not adjusting well to uniforms, how can you possibly expect your children to adjust?

My opinion, at that age, kids could not care any less about wearing a uniform. Unless of course there is a bit of adult persuasion in the mix. Furthermore, if it's a public school, there are no private votes. The only thing that would limit parental/community involvement is their own disinterest.
