Well I'm 23 lbs lighter now. Good progress but I still have 47 more lbs to go. I've been cutting back on my food intake, dropped the soft drinks, drinking a lot of water, and hitting the elliptical every night. I can actually do 1 hour on the elliptical without dying.

I think now I'm going to move into strength training. One problem though is I don't have time to hit a gym, nor do I want to pay the monthly fees. At home I have no one to spot me so free weights is limited. I'm thinking about buying a used Bowflex. I know a lot of people talk crap about them, but I think I'm willing to give it a try. Has anyone used one before?

Re: Update on my weight loss

Excellent!! 23lbs is a lot of weight to lose. I've been trying to lose 40lbs to help both my heart and my back and I'm having a terrible times.
My wife has put me on a low carb diet...she lost weight I gained. So that didn't work....I've tried to reduce portions...now I'm trying some acupuncture to try to curb my appetite.

What are you doing that has worked for you?
I have a bad back so any exercising has to be on the light side. I have a treadmill and I can do about 20 minutes before the pain is too much.

Bowflex is basically a resistance machine, but the dang thing costs an arm and a leg. There are other options to at least get you started, then think about throwing down the big bucks for a lifting system if the starting options are not enough.

I can offer you suggestion that works for me. Cheaper than a bowflex, takes up less room, and you can make the workouts as simple or as challenging as you want.

Use body weight resistance exercise. push-ups, pull-ups, dips, lunges. a hang-in-a-doorway pull-up bar is $30 at Wal-mart. Doesn't even have to hang there permanently. They make them now so that friction holds them in place, and you can put them away when you are done. They even have multiple grip locations so that you can vary your hand/arm position to hit different muscle groups. Muscle confusion is a great tool to help build muscle quickly. Pull-ups are excellent exercises for your back and shoulder muscle groups. If you can't do a full set of pull-ups, you can "spot" yourself by getting a step stool under you and helping out with your legs.
Push-ups are a great chest exercise. Again, you can keep your muscles confused by varying your hand position; close together, spread apart, fingers back, fingers pointing in, etc. you can also vary your lower body position by putting your feet up on a chair, or feet on the ground and your hands on a chair. No danger of dropping any weights on yourself.
Lunges are a great lower body exercise, and I guarantee you that doing them with no weight is challenging enough to start defining your glutes and thighs. Again, you can change the exercise by altering your start or end position, doing lunges up or down stairs, step-ups on a platform, etc.

For some additional challenges, get some resistance bands, basically big ole rubber bands with handles on them. You can use them for added resistance (If you are doing push-ups for instance, you can hold them across your back, and as you extend your push-up, the band is adding resistance pushing you back down) or there are bunches of exercises you can use them for by themselves; curls, overhead press, chest flys, etc.

My final suggestion would be to get yourself a multi-position bench and the dial-a-weight dumbells. Dumbell exercises are limitless for upper body. I personally find them among the most challenging b/c you have to stabilize each weight independently, so that causes you to work out more muscles with every set. Its also easier to maneuver and drop a 50 Lb dumbell than a 100 LB barbell. A nice set of the dial-a-weight dumbells with a bench is still gonna be about half the price of a bowflex.

Sorry to get long-winded on you, but I see people too often get hung up on a big contraption like a bowflex or a home gym system, only to see it getting used as a clothes hanger in 6 months time. Start simple, and once the simple exercises don't do it for you anymore, you are in a much better position to decide whether to step up to an expensive exercise system.

Re: Update on my weight loss

Free weights........ the trick is not the amount but the reps to build muscle tone. Free weights are cheap (many given away at garage sales and CL) and easy.

As far as a spotter goes...... if you are using free weights at home ...... do not lock the collar on the bar and if you are ever in trouble ....tip the bar and dump the plates off one side. You should never need to be benching a heavy set all the time.

The bowflex is pricey :( and a nice bench should suit your needs.

Good job on the weight loss!!

Re: Update on my weight loss

eastont: What I have done for my diet is just watch my caloric intake and drink lots and lots of water. I'm not starving myself, but I make sure I at least look at the calorie and fat content. In my mind I do the calculation to see how long it would take me on the elliptical to burn those calories off....since I hate cardio, that in itself helps me put things down. No matter what you are doing to loose weight the one thing you have to do is burn more calories than you take in. Being a fat man, I know I have to really push both sides of the equation, take in less calories and workout more to burn more calories. The energy that is stored in that fat doesn't get consumed until the body has no more readily available energy to use (calories from what you consume right now). Some people don't realize that 1lb of fat in your body is roughly equal to 3200 calories. It took me 1 hour on the elliptical last night to burn 930 calories. So you can see to really start shedding the pounds you have to increase your activity levels far above what you are consuming to start making a dent in your "reserve fat".

As for your back issues, do a little research online to see what excercises are recommended for people with chronic back issues. There may be somethings you could do with light weights or resistance bands to put a little more work on your muscles (to burn more calories) without leading to pain. Also, there might be some back excersises you could do to help strengthen the muscles around the back to help relieve some of the pain when you are walking.

eavega: great advice, but my plans are to get a used one relatively cheap from the ones that buy them and then use them as clothes racks. LOL. I have gotten the smaller dumbells and resistance bands and started doing what you say. My problem is that it works for only so long. I used to lift weights pretty hard in the past and tend to strengthen quickly and need more resistance. I figured a bowflex could help me out there. I prefer free weights, I just don't have a spotter at home.

Re: Update on my weight loss

I started hitting our elliptical 10 days ago because of you! I lost 4lbs so far, but I;m only doing 30 minutes, and burning just under 500 calories each session.
We also have a nice nautilus resistance machine which I am going to start using as soon as I feel I've got my stamina back, it's a sweet machine, I got it at a year end blowout sale for like $1000 off. Same with the elliptical, got a smoking deal and they are both club quality. Might want to check their site out.

Anyway, thanks for motivating me!

Re: Update on my weight loss

Congrats Pirate. I am down over 55 pounds since May ... 5 more to go till the end of the year and then another 40+ next year. For me it is lots of fluids and fiber. Fill up on veggies and eat small portions of the other stuff. Instead of the late evening snack it is a glass of Metamucil. I have been satisfied, happy, and seeing nice, slow results. Doing a DP machine about every other day, and walking also.

That's fantastic Art! I bet you feel a whole lot better than you did last year. Just with my 25lbs I can feel the difference in my joints and such.

How long have you been on it?

Going on 2 months now. I enjoy the atkins diet. Just had my blood work done and it is the lowest it has ever been.

Re: Update on my weight loss

I did forget to say, Great Job FBPirate on losing the weight. I know firsthand that its a challenge to do all the things that will help you lose weight and keep it off. Its not just about eating less, or exercising more, its about making sustainable changes to your lifestyle that promotes good health. Way to go!

Yeah, if you were a lifter beforehand, the body resistance exercises are a good start, but you will need some free weights or higher-resistance equipment to continue. I read an article about a study that was done where they proved that muscle does have memory, and if you were bulked up to a certain size previously, your muscles will try to get back there again with whatever training you do.

Good luck, and keep up the good work!

For you guys doing the Atkins diet, please remember that after the induction, you NEED to start eating vegetables, fruits, and even some grains. A lot of people focus on the protein aspect of the diet, but that is incomplete nutrition and from personal experience is unsustainable over the long (i.e. +1 yrs) run. If you find yourself with the need to read a book and are interested in the subject of how Dr. Atkins devised his diet, the metabolic mechanisms that allow it to work, and what is really making us obese and killing us at an alarming rate, read "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. This book was a real eye-opener for me. Deals with how highly processed foods are leading to insulin resistance, heart disease, diabetes, gout, and other assorted "diseases of civilization", and how the medical establishment has made conclusions about fat, cholesterol, and other nutrients before all the evidence was in.

Thanks TC. I will say it was surprising to find out what color shoes I had on! LOL JK

And just to prove and hold myself accountable I just took this picture to show the length of time and calories I burned tonight.
