Update:
Well guess i dont have to worry about him sinking any time soom. THe brand new engine he was told (circa 1973) melted on him this weekend. He told me he painted the lower unit and got paint inside the water intake and thats why the motor melted. At least thats what his "mechanic says" , im using this term loosly. Dont know how true that alittle paint would cause his motor to overheat or his "mechanic" never relpaced the impeller.

just an update for you guys,

later,

Big-E

If you remember this topic i started the other day http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=1;t=012273

i have more info.

The guy who fixed his boat came out to look at it yesterday and stated to him he has nothing to worry about that the fiberglass job he did to seal the crack will hold her just fine. I again told him this was garbage. He said for me to try and move the motor and guess what happend when i did? It cracked again.. lol He just said.. well i need more glass/resin but she'll be going out tomrrow. Ive done all i can with this guy and spoke with his wife and kids but of course they belive daddy who in this cause is being a complete moron. My concious is clear on them now.

just though id share,

Big-E

This is a fascinating story (kind of like watching a train wreck). I hope you keep us in formed - and can be a friend to this guy whithout him getting totally pissed at your efforts. Good luck on both accounts.

I think he's sorta getting pissed at my warnings. I told him today before i went to work that for the record i think its a bad idea and wont say anything else about it. I did tell him to file a float plan with me before he goes out and i will call coast gaurd if your not back at desg time and i havn't heard from you. The scary part was he asked what a float plan was..

I will keep everyone informed.

Big-E

Sometimes people should be just left alone - what to me might seem dangerous, but to you is just a slight risk you're willing to take. Actually I'm the opposite of what I just wrote - I tend to understand that we're all getting way to concerned about risks and protecting the public. I dont believe in mandatory helmet and seatbelt laws (for adults) and disagree with the trend to outlaw cigarette smoking (not talking about second hand smoke laws). Even though I think it's stupid not to use seatbelts or smoke. I tend to let adults make their own choices.

But, from what you've written, it seems like something even I'd badger a friend about. Just seems so stupid to me and the guy seems to be oblivious in a way. Like you said, I hope his kids don't drown because of it, and if he does, he's made arrangements for their health and welfare when he's gone.

Ah, one of my favorite topics. I just retired from the Coast Guard after 20 years active duty and I now work as a Civilian SAR Specialist.

When people like this break down, we call it "Job Security". When someone is injured or dies, we call it a tragedy like everyone else. Over the years, you get a little cold with it, and sometimes it evens boils down to the fact that I am out here all night in crappy weather searching for a guy who could have avoided this situation.

Big-E, he may not see it now but you are being a good friend. Hopefully it won't be too late when he sees it.

/r
scuda

Is there a way you could alert a family member of his to the risks this guy is taking - - and the potential consequences (ie. fatal)?

The update is the engine, right? How do you keep a straight face?

I've told a few tales here about my knucklehead friend (who I am much closer to than it appears you are with this guy). Pretty tough for me to keep reminding him how stupid he is, but I really feel like I am saving his family and possibly mine

He takes advice pretty well, but he doesn't really understand why he should a) stop tailgating while pulling a trailer, b) use the right height for his trailer ball, c) actually have air in his spare tire, d) slow down if your passengers are all complaining about backaches e) stay more than 25 ft. from me and well astern.

I am not kidding on any one of these BTW. The last one is drving me crazy. While we are cruising (boats) I'll look over and he is directly adjacent to me so that if I have to change course in his direction, I am guaranteed to hit him!!! He just kinda creeps up there. I have tried telling him we need to run like wing men (one of us significantly in front of the other and not in-line), and tried to make it sound like fun to save his feelings. He is not catching on. I will end up having to be real blunt with him and then Mrs. Quietcat will get mad at me . . .

Yea this is on the motor, lets not talk about his trailer and how unsafe it is. He has tires rated for about 700 lbs for a boat and motor thats more like 3 k, no tie downs, no spare and its pulled by a not so good running 70's chevy pickup truck. "btw this weekend he proceded to tell me his truck has 375 hp when my v6 explorer with the ac on will out acc him like a dragster to a pinto!"

I dont have to worry about Mrs. Big-E getting made at me cause she really dosnt like him anyway, but he has tried to follow me out to my honey holes before, and procedes to either ride right behind me "closer then 20 feet" or right on my side to where i can touch his boat with a fishing rod. Just like your buddy he dosnt listen to well, thats why my little 3.0 l bowrider does close to 50 and his tank will do 37 mph max on gps.

later,

Big-E
