Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

Ok, made a lot of progress tonight. I got the skin off the inside of the transom and here's what I found...............Quite a lot of rotted wood. You can see where I drove the wrecking bar pretty far into the double layer of ply on the port side. It's all rotted under there. Looks like the lower starboard side of the transom is the same.

I dug out the whole port side of the single layer of ply. Didn't take all that long. Needs some more work with the chisel and then I'll be grinding.
HPIM3039-1.jpg

Suprisingly, as wet and rotted as the port side is, the stringer is absolutely bone dry.

Progress tonight was to work on getting the wood off the transom. Started by cutting a grid with a skill saw set to depth. Then worked on prying out some of the sections. Most of it is really wet, quite a bit is rotted.

Man, be glad it's mostly rotten. Dry transoms are a b!!$!@# to remove. Yours looks like mine; easy to get to and a nice, basic shape.

yeah guys, the access is really good. Big enough for both of us to sit up under there with grinders and tyvek suits, john!!!!! haha. Dueling Grinders?

Danond, yes, the shape is pretty basic. The rotted wood sure comes out easier than the dry stuff, like you said.

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

Got a lot done on the boat tonight. Thanks in part to my friend Paul who has been helping me an awful lot lately. Much appreciated. We got the transom cleaned off to a smooth thin layer of ply on the glass. There was a lot of wet and rotted wood in there. Looking pretty good now.........

HPIM3048.jpg

We got the front 3 bulkheads out........the remainder of the starboard stringer and all the foam on that side as well as the forward compartment.

HPIM3053.jpg

Things were going along really great until some freaking bonehead cut through the hull with a sawzall.........yep, me.

HPIM3047.jpg

I started cutting the foam back under the bow deck. Water had been trapped in between the front bulkheads for who knows how long til i discovered it. The foam was only wet for a few inches back in there, so I don't have to dig all that out. Just need to put in new bulkheads

In all a pretty productive night out there!

Here's a question for the pros, I used a 40 grit flapwheel sanding disk and hit this spot to clean the wood off the transom. How far do I need to go with this? Just until it is bare fiberglass? Is 40 grit enough for the transom?

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

Ok, a list. I need to put together an order from u.s. composites. I don't want to forget anything so, everyone help me get it right the first time, please! lol

- I'm going to do the stringers, transom and deck with epoxy resin and 1708 Biax I think Johnny said he used 30 yards. So, I'll likely need 40 plus yards of that stuff.

- For resin, u.s. composites 635 thin epoxy. 3-1 medium hardener, right? Maybe see if i can get a small amount of fast hardener as well.

- Pumps for resin and hardener? not sure, maybe measuring is better.

- Mix and Measure Quart Pails

- Nitrile Gloves

- Peanut Butter Making stuff?? what to use with epoxy?

I'll keep on editing this til I got all I need, then get it ordered. Inputs appreciated!!

Thanks John!

Progress today was just a lot of grinding. The transom is done. Working on grinding down all the edges from the stringer glass and the glass around the transom and along the edges of the boat where the deck attached and where all the bulkheads were and where the mounting blocks for the gas tank were and ...............on and on and on and on. Holy crap, the dust generated is amazing. Thank god for that blower and the tarps I set up or I'd probably be divorced this week some time.

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

Well, here's some progress pics from this week. Got quite a bit done. Owe a great debt of gratitude to my friend Paul for helping me too.

Here is the transom ground down to the fiberglass.
HPIM3059.jpg

There is no wood left above the sole. I even tore out a perfectly dry stringer just because i've come this far i guess...............
HPIM3063.jpg

Here is where I cut out a rotten section of my dash where water infiltrated the compass hole due to a leaking windshield.......
HPIM3061.jpg

Interestingly, the wood that came from the dash was solid pieces of what looked like end cuts from 2 x 4? strange for sure. Is there a reason for this in that area? I can't think of why it would need to flex. It isn't concave either. hmmmm.....................

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

Hey all, John just left. We had a great evening of dinner, basketball and boat talk with he and his lovely wife, Tina!

We were looking over my boat and one question we both have is will Epoxy Resin create a strong bond with a brushed on gelcoat in the sole of the boat or does it have to be ground down to the glass? Also, how do you tell if its a gel coat or a really good paint? It's tough to grind off, I know that much.

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

Yep that was fun , tell Andi thanks for the great food, we doth had a great time !! we will have to do it again real soon!!!!!!!!

I am allmost postive that it is gelcoat on the sole of his hull !! its to thick for paint , but we were wondering how strong is gelcoat to the hull ???

I was thinking it all needs to come off to make a good bond !!!!

But why would you gelcoat the hull down there ??? John

Re: Upon Further Review..#$%@..1973 Slickcraft Trans/String Overhaul

I chipped some of that stuff up, john, it's definitely gelcoat. I have about 2 more hours of grinding, then a total boat cleanup and wipe down. My glass supplies will be in wednesday, and then I can start putting her back together!
