Upper shift shaft

I have a question about the upper shift shaft. I have the Merc 260 and I am replacing the shift cable. The arm at the top of the shaft was real loose but I tightend the set screw and it tightened back up, however the little roller is chewed up a little so I am going to replace it. The shaft its self has some up and down movement and some movement side to side. is this suppose to be the case? Is there suppose to be up and down movement? I asume that the side to side could be from worn bushings. Does the shaft itself ever wear, it looks to be in good shape? The shaft is the most expensive part so if it does not need replacing I would rather not. i will replace the arm, bushings seals and washers...H

The shaft is stainless and the bushings are a softer brass. I would guess that the bushings should wear out before the shaft should.

You'll know how it looks when you replace the bushings if there is worn spots on the shaft then. I'd guess it's probably ok.

Yes I had intended on replacing the bushings. As a matter of fact I picked them up today along with the arm. What is up with Mercury quicksilver parts,They cannot include the set screw with the arm, You have to buy it seperatly?.
Any way what is advantage of the new style bushings? one of them is a lot bigger than the original....H

I guess I have stopped being surprised by anything Mercruiser does with parts

The new bushing has two rubber seals built into it.
