Anyone here have any experience with USAA insurance? I'm going to get a quote from them to see what their premiums cost, but have never heard how well they handle making claims. Hoping to get some personal experiences of how they were handled if your willing to share.

I have all my insurance through them. Their service is fantastic. However, they will jack your rates after a claim just like anyone else. Got a new roof due to a hail storm and my rate doubled. I'm damaged goods though now so no one else's rates are currently any better. In addition to the great service, for me it's also the convenience of having everything in one place. I do all my banking with them as well. I get bummed out when I have to get a car loan or something from somewhere else (due to better manufacturer financing rate or something). They also do a profit sharing thing annually which is applied to your insurance bill.

You can also be the direct family member of a service person that was honorably discharged, you do not need to be an actual service member to get USAA insurance, they will extend benefits to family members also, it will cost you a bit more if you have not served, but it is still available.

I can only talk from my experience as a medical provider who has dealt with them way more than I'd like. At least as far as Minnesota is concerned it seems car insurance companies take turns being the worst and currently USAA has drawn that straw. They're either extremely disorganized o just plain evil. You can expect medical claims to be denied 2 or 3 times before they even think about paying. My billing office has considered charging extra to deal with them.

I have USAA(My father was an officer in the Navy). I feel its the best insurance company around. I have it for car, boat and home. I have had just a few claims and never had my rates increased.

That I can believe. I fought Tri Care for a couple months, not the VA but still military. I wrote to my senator/house rep and the whole works but nobody cared that Tri Care didn't hold up to their responsibilities. I finally concluded the best solution was to give the military guys a heck of a great, less than half price, cash rate.

I retired in 2006 from the army with the rank of O-6(26 years), was shot and wounded in the first gulf conflict, have a Silver Star, 2 Bronze Stars, 2 Purple Hearts and been declared permanently disabled, and dealing with the VA has been nothing but a fight all the way.

There are days I wonder if it was worth it!

Then I remember why I did it!

Re: USAA insurance?

Have a friend with USAA. Helped her when her husband was killed by a trucker totaling his car. USAA have handled there side of her claims with graciousness, understanding, and promptly. I was very impressed with their care, concern, help, and some of the things they offered to do or help with, like changing names of titles and deeds, etc.

Never worked with an insurance company that has been so helpful. They have one more claim to pay, but the trucking company has not been forthright in giving the limits of their insurance limits so USAA can pay the underinsured part of the claim.

My wife's father was a veteran, so after dealing with them as a proxy, I am seriously thinking of getting some quotes. Only thing stopping me is a good friend is my agent and does well at taking care of me ...

Interesting the VA comments. My dad is a decorated, wounded, vietnam vet (several AK holes all over his body). He loves the VA both when he lived in MN and since he retired to Hawaii. I can't figure it out but he praises it.

My Dad loves it as well, myself have been pretty disappointed with them.

You don't mention if it's for a boat or not. From what i have read on other boating sites U.S.S.A no longer writes boat ins.It grandfathered current policy holders. It was nothing but a ins.broker for Progressive Ins.As far as a medical insurer i boat with a retired A.F Bird Colonel (F4 pilot) who swears by them.

Not all VA facilities are the same, the attitude of staff varies greatly. I am fortunate that the one I use are very good and I would not be here today without them.

USAA has great customer service, their rates are the best I EVERY found among all Ins Co's.

However, if You total YOUR vehicle, they will only pay an 'Actual Cash Value' which is no where near what you will find the same vehicle for sale, anywhere. Far less than Kelley Blue Book, NADA, or any other appraisal you may have.

I wasn't aware that usaa does not offer boat ins. But I was curious about auto/home ins. Going to call them Monday for a quote, and see how they compair to my current insurance company with cost/coverage. I like the company I have now, just looking to see if I can save a few penny's, and I have never talked to anyone with experience with usaa when making a claim. Don't wanna make the switch and if the unfortunate happens and try to file a claim and have to jump through flaming hoops to get anything out of them.

Re: USAA insurance?

You won't. I had a camper shell stolen out of my back yard once. They told me to get 3 estimates and let them know what they were. I was being a little lazy and got one after 3 weeks which I though was on the high side. They called me to ask me how the estimates were going. I told them what the one estimate was. They said we will send you a check. Don't worry about the other estimates.

I have other positive stories to tell as well if interested between myself and my entire family. Not one bad experience.

Re: USAA insurance?

So far seems like they are good about handling claims, I have also been searching other parts of the Internet for reviews, and between what everyone on here says, and my other searches, they seem to be a stand up company.
I appreciate the feed back from everyone.

Re: USAA insurance?

USAA is generally considered the best insurance company. I've had policies with them for 26 years and have been satisfied with their service. They don't handle boat insurance. that got farmed out to Progressive. I had 1 claim with Progressive and it was handled well.
